The liquid can only beseen under ultraviolet light and any markeditems can be traced back to their owners.The RNLI, which provides lifeguard cover inconjunction with Sefton Council, has started touse the technology after thieves stole four quadbikes in February used by lifeguards for theirbeach patrols in the borough. Police recoveredtwo of the bikes but the other vehicles remainunaccounted for at a cost of £5,000 each.All the equipment being used by RNLIlifeguards for their patrols on Sefton’s beachesis now protected by SmartWater.SmartWater chief executive, Phil Cleary, said:“RNLI lifeguards carry out critical, lifesavingwork and it is therefore imperative thateverything possible is done to protect vitalequipment from the risk of theft. The liquidprovides robust forensic traceability, which hasaided over 1000 criminal convictions.
