Holland - a legacy in pumpingPumping and pump manufacture have long beenan integral part of the history of Holland.Throughout the centuries the Dutch havedesigned and applied all kinds of pumping devicesfor the purpose of making land out of water.In fact, over half of Holland’s land surface hasbeen wrestled from its lakes, marshlands andformer Zuiderzee.From the beginning of the industrial revolutionthe Dutch were quick to utilize their specificknow-how in a wide range of industries and indoing so became leading experts in the field ofpump manufacture.New needs - new deedsDuring the first twenty years of its existence,Houttuin used the principle of its founder’spatented, symmetric screw design for all itsproducts. This design sufficed to cover allindustrial and maritime applications that existedat that time. With the advent of new liquids andsubstances, industrial pumping needs becameincreasingly complex. Twin screw pumps - the original designHouttuin’s original design provided the blueprintfor today’s so called twin-screw positivedisplacement rotary pumps. Based on theArchimedean principle, two intermeshing screwson parallel shafts operate inside a close fitting,8-shaped liner. Liquids are pumped from bothends into the pump’s centre body where thedischarge is located. The short shaft is driven bythe long shaft through a set of external precisiontiming gears.Houttuin twin-screw pumps feature a clearancebetween the screws and external timing gears oneach shaft. These precision gears prevent screwcontact by maintaining a constant space betweenthe screws. The major advantages of this designare less wear on the screws (and, as a result,prolonged life of the pumps), less chance of liquidcontamination by metal particles (swarf) duringpumping and reduced risk of damage if the pumpshould run dry.


High tech designHouttuin has evolved into a sophisticatedorganization. At Houttuin, all pump designingis computerized using the most advancedcomputer techniques and the latest CAD/CAEsoftware. The major advantages lie not only in thereduction of error, but also in the added flexibilitywhich enables Houttuin to develop tailor-madesolutions, geared to the needs of each individualcustomer, with short lead times.

Houttuin’s service and repair around the clockProblem solvingHouttuin has used its expertise to solve pumpingproblems as diverse as:• the processing of high-grade synthetic pulpfibre in an airtight environment without changingthe structure of the emulsion;• removing abrasive toxic waste from surfacewater with a light, transportable pump;• pumping chocolate emulsion in the foodprocessing industry.The facility of Houttuin B.V. consists of aManufacturing Department for new pumps and aService Department.Houttuin’s Service Department offers aroundthe clock service (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)and takes care of preventative and periodicpump maintenance. It carries out all repairs anycustomer anywhere in the world may require.This service takes also care of damage assessment,on-site installation and commissioningactivities.
