Vocational <strong>Education</strong> ProgramsVocational education in India aims to develop skilled manpowerthrough diversified courses to meet the requirements of organizedand unorganized sectors and to instill self-employment skills inpeople through a large number of self employment orientedcourses. It is expected that there will be an acute shortage ofskilled manpower in the world by 2022. Indian manpower will behandy by then. Government of India has already announced skilldevelopment for 500 million Indians by 2022.In the USA and some other countries, community colleges(technical colleges) are primarily two-year institutions of highereducation. After graduating from a community college, somestudents transfer to a university or liberal arts college for two yearsto complete a bachelor’s degree, while others enter the workforce.Community colleges serve the needs of society through trainingskilled workers and also provide opportunity to students continuetheir education in professional colleges. Indian institutions havea wide range of opportunities for collaborating with foreigncommunity colleges and technical colleges for skills development.Faculty Exchange ProgramsFaculty exchange programs would provide participants with theopportunity to teach or conduct research for one semester or anacademic year at a foreign university. Faculty members wouldbenefit from exposure to a culturally varied and diverse facultymake-up, with an opportunity to exchange ideas and observe avariety of styles. Faculty exchange program is one way to takeadvantage of the benefits of diverse faculty.In order to create diverse faculty, foreign universities and Indianinstitutions can develop plans for faculty exchange programs. <strong>The</strong>benefit will be immediate, and students will have the opportunityto learn concepts and ideas presented in an entirely new anddifferent manner. <strong>The</strong> faculty exchange programs present a uniqueopportunity for interaction between foreign universities and Indianinstitutions.Student Exchange ProgramsIn student exchange programs between Indian institutions andforeign universities, students choose to study abroad and viceversa in collaborating institutions. An exchange student could livewith a host family or in a designated place including hostel, affordableapartment / house or student lodge. <strong>The</strong> cost for eachprogram differs according to countries and institutions. <strong>The</strong> participantscould either receive scholarship / loan, or be self-funded.Programs vary depending upon program length, country, contentand other factors. Students going on university exchange couldpay tuition fees on home campus. Students going on exchangeprogram could choose either to live on campus or off campus.Partnership ProgramsAcademic Partnership programs can be established for thepurpose of improving the academic quality of Indian seniorsecondary schools, junior colleges, and degree colleges.Partnership programs help to improve the preparation of studentsfor entry into foreign universities.Partnerships between Indian institutions and the foreignuniversities may be entered into, so that Indian students whocomplete 12th standard could be admitted as freshmen inGraduate programs of foreign universities. Similar partnershipsmay be entered into so that Indian Graduate students may beadmitted to Post-Graduate programs in foreign universities directly.Partnership programs provide a measure of certainty to students inIndian institutions that they will be accepted in good foreign universities.Students will be spared the stress of having to prepare for the highlycompetitive entrance examinations in India with the knowledge thattheir admission in foreign universities is almost assured.Study Abroad in India ProgramsStudy abroad in India programs will foster intercultural developmentamong students, who will have the understanding and skills to effectively,humanely, and positively navigate across different cultures.Studying abroad in India for a semester or year will give studentsa fresh perspective on themselves, India, and the world. It willexpose them to diverse people and viewpoints, and they will getto experience a different way of life apart from their own in theircountry. <strong>The</strong>y will be immersed in the language, culture, andpeople of the host country and will get to experience life asresidents, not as mere tourists. While studying in India, they willalso earn credit towards their current degree.Students will pay the regular tuition and fees, room and boardexpenses, to their parent institution. Foreign universities will payan agreed amount to Indian institutions for providing tuition, roomand board. International travel costs will be borne by the students.<strong>Summit</strong>s 2012, 2011, 2010 & 2009<strong>The</strong> <strong>Indus</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> has been privileged to organize <strong>Education</strong><strong>Summit</strong>s in 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 in India. <strong>The</strong> objective ofthe <strong>Summit</strong>s was to explore opportunities for academiccollaborations between Indian institutions and foreign universities.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Summit</strong>s also guided Indian students about opportunities forhigher education in foreign universities. By all accounts, the<strong>Summit</strong>s were considered highly successful. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Summit</strong>s wereattended by university chancellors, provosts, deans, faculty, andenrollment / recruitment officers of foreign universities from aroundthe World.
