Gillespie - Hilda SinkinsonWE STILL CAN'T TAKE ITIn the March issue of Spindrift I hada short article headed "We Can't Take It"in which I criticised the attitude of theCanadian Ice Hockey Team to their defeatin the final of the World's Ice HockeyChampionship.This roused to a white heat the ire ofa friend of mine of long standing. To thisI have no objection whatever. It is alwayssome satisfaction to anyone who writes tohave some notice taken of what he haswritten. My friend, in my opinion, missedthe bus by failing to write a scathingcolumn <strong>for</strong> Spindrift, thereby helping tofill the paper and depriving others of joiningin the argument, but contented himselfwlith blowing his top to a mutualfriend in the privacy of his own home. Itook an early opportunity of calling onhim to hear at first hand what he had tosay.Here is the gist of my friend's argumentas far as I can remember it. Canadacreated the game of ice hockey and laiddown the first rules and the game shouldbe played according to those rules. TheCanadian team, in the game againstSweden was playing both the Swedishteam and the referee and was being booedand severely penalized. I, the writer, ama Canadian and should support all thingsCanadian.In view of the fact that in Europe,including Britain, the rules differ fromthe Canadian rules it is probable thatspecial rules governed the championshipgames. If so the obligation was placedupon all teams, including Canada, to observethose rules. In these rules the bodycheck would almost certainly be allowedas a means of obtaining possession of thepuck although body checking is not allowedin Britain. Like all body contactsit can be used fairly but it can also beused to injure or cripple an opponent. Inall probability boarding entered into thepicture. Holding the puck against theboards is commonly used in Canada asalso is holding a player against theboards.The charge that Canada was playingboth the Swedish team and the refereeappears to be impossible to support byreason of the fact that a Swedish refereewould not be allowed to referee a game inwhich Sweden was taking part. It was no easy victory<strong>for</strong> Fanthorpe, however, as Norm put upa gallant fight and was edged out -3 andseems to be that they were playing a roughgame and were being rightly penalized.I noticed in the Victoria Times of April24th a report that the Ontario Hockey AssociativeExecutive criticised hockey playerswho hold the puck against the boardsand <strong>for</strong>ce a face-off and also players whohold an opposing player against theboards.Another instance of poor sportsmanshipoccurred in one of the EasternHockey Championship games in whichonly one member of the losing team shookhands with and congratulated the winners.I acknowledge gladly that I am a Canadianand in this connection feel sure thatmy friend does not really mean that Ishould support and approve of all thingsdone or said by Canadians whether I thinkthem right or wrong.I have not yet been deported.
