GORSEINON COLLEGEEMA – STUDENT ATTENDANCE GUIDELINESEMA is paid fortnightly, a week in arrears and no payment is made for academicholidays. Payments that fall on a bank holiday are paid on the next working day.You will only receive a weekly award if you attend the College on a full-time basis andyour course of study is more than 12 hours per week. If you have any absences duringa week for reasons that are not authorised, you will lose your EMA entitlement for thewhole week. This applies even if only one lesson is missed during the week and thisincludes tutorial. EMA is not paid during academic holiday period.ALL ABSENCES WILL BE CLASSED AS UNAUTHORISED UNLESS APPOINTMENTCARDS OR OFFICIAL LETTERS CAN BE PRODUCED. IT IS YOURRESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE A REASON AS TO WHY THE ABSENCE SHOULDBE AUTHORISED.Unauthorised AbsencesRinging the College Nurse or the EMA Officer to report your absence does not qualifyyou for your EMA payment. Hand written notes will not be accepted as authorisedabsences.The following reasons are not acceptable reasons for an authorised absence:-• Sickness• Holidays, as these should be taken outside of term-time• Part or full-time work that is not part of the programme of study• Leisure activities• Birthdays or family celebrations• Babysitting including babysitting brothers, sisters• Driving lessonsAuthorised AbsencesIf the absence is known in advance you must apply to the EMA Officer for an authorisedabsence before the event. If for example you have to attend a family funeral or weddingyou must apply in writing to the EMA Officer, who will decide whether or not yourabsence can be authorised. Absences for university visits or open days should beauthorised on proof of a letter/documentation from the institution or an authorised activityabsence form signed by your <strong>college</strong> lecturer.Absences can only be authorised when there is a good, clear reason. Official evidencemust be provided to the EMA Officer who is located on the first floor of the new StudentServices building. Alternatively mail can be left in the red post box located on the wall inthe Student Common Room which is emptied daily.EMA Student Rules & Procedures - 2009/2010
