ANNUAL REPORT <strong>2011</strong>-12Children’s SectionCMRD has acquired a total <strong>of</strong> 504 books during the presentyear for Children’s Library.Updation <strong>of</strong> DatabasesComputerised databases <strong>of</strong> books and journal articlesupdated and maintained on a continuous basis form themajor strength <strong>of</strong> CMRD. Based on these databases CMRDprovides various information services. Presently the booksdatabase consists <strong>of</strong> 90,857 books and 1,19,834 referencesin Journal articles database.CMRD Information Products / ServicesCMRD Alerts, <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Index and Newspaperclippings are the information products through whichCMRD disseminates information. All these publicationswere brought out regularly during the period under review.In addition, CMRD provides services like literaturesearches, photocopying, inter-library loan, etc., to itsusers.Institutional MembershipNIRD Institutional Membership <strong>of</strong>fered to ruraldevelopment organisations and institutions is maintainedby CMRD. The members are entitled to free subscriptionto Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Development</strong>, NIRD Newsletter and allun-priced publications and 50 per cent discount on allpriced publications <strong>of</strong> NIRD. ANNUAL REPORT <strong>2011</strong>-12CHAPTERINFORMATIONDISSEMINATIONThe <strong>Institute</strong> has a mandate to disseminate information onrural development. In fulfilling the mandate, the <strong>Institute</strong>brings out regularly a quarterly journal, a monthly newsletter,Research Highlights, Recommendations <strong>of</strong> Seminars andWorkshops and <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Statistics. As a leadingpublisher <strong>of</strong> rural development literature in India, NIRDendeavours to share its research findings, observed fieldrealities and views on issues <strong>of</strong> current topical importancewith policy planners, academics and others through itsregular publications, occasional papers etc. The publications<strong>of</strong> NIRD serve the policymakers in terms <strong>of</strong> providingfeedback <strong>of</strong> ground level realities, <strong>of</strong>fer suggestions andguidelines for better planning and management <strong>of</strong> ruraldevelopment programmes.PublicationsJournal and PeriodicalsThe quarterly Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Development</strong> (JRD) is theflagship publication <strong>of</strong> NIRD and is one <strong>of</strong> the leadingacademic journals in the field <strong>of</strong> rural development anddecentralised administration. With an impressive circulationboth within and outside the country, it is one <strong>of</strong> the mostsought-after journals by the academic community, ruraldevelopment administrators and planners. JRD has, over theyears, built up a reputation for high standard <strong>of</strong> articles andpromptness <strong>of</strong> publication. The papers received forpublication are reviewed thoroughly at different levels, bothby the NIRD faculty and the outside subject matter specialiststo ensure quality.During the year, four issues <strong>of</strong> JRD (Vol.30 No.2, 3 and 4 andVol.31 No.1) containing 34 articles and 19 book reviews werebrought out. All the book reviews in these issues werecontributed by NIRD faculty members.NIRD NewsletterThe NIRD Newsletter, a monthly publication, highlights therecommendations <strong>of</strong> various training programmes, seminarsand workshops, and important events which are undertakenby NIRD on a regular basis. Besides giving advance publicityon the training programmes scheduled for the next twomonths, the Newsletter covers the news <strong>of</strong> facultydevelopment, success stories, visits and delegations – bothIndia and foreign – to the <strong>Institute</strong> etc. Through this medium,NIRD maintains regular contacts with SIRDs, DRDAs andNGOs. Newsletters No.192 to 202 issues from April <strong>2011</strong> toMarch <strong>2012</strong> were brought out during the year.Research <strong>Report</strong>s - Published during the year <strong>2011</strong>-12One <strong>of</strong> the main functions <strong>of</strong> NIRD is research covering impactassessment, monitoring studies, diagnostic studies, casedocumentation etc. The findings <strong>of</strong> these research studiesare published as reports every year for wider dissemination.During the year, the following Research <strong>Report</strong>s werepublished:1.
