DavidBieneStory: Ingo HeinzmannPhotos: David BieneThe man in black said:“I pray you don’t look at me, I pray I don’tlook back”. Take a look at the man withthe camera. I’m sure, he will look back. But don’t move, ’cause he might shoot.David Biene is a passionate, sensitive andmaniac photographer. During his studies atthe Lette Verein technical school for photodesign in Berlin, he specialized in peopleand music photography. After finishing Lette,he got his own studio and started workingfor various music & fashion magazines,as well as car mags and artists. Musicstill is one of his priorities. „I don’t haveany idols or Gods, but some musicians reallymean a lot to me. Taking portraits ofthem is a great honor to me. But during ashooting there’s no use to treat them assomething special. I guess my wildcard duringa session results from true respect, appreciation & passion“, he says. His instinct, credibility and passion have openedhim a few doors that remained shut formany others. When Orange County punkrock legends Social Distortion made theirtriumphal comeback-tour two years ago, guess who did the job. “Shooting Mike Nesscombined the best of both worlds: attitudeof a credible musician and true- heartedoutlaw hot rod spirit.” When he portraysmusicians, the atmosphere that emergesfrom the images is almost scary sometimes.Just take the portrait of Mike Ness:him sitting in a fucked-up, flat black hotrod, left eyebrow up in the air, you can almostfeel the contempt spitting back outof the exhaust. „For me, music photographyis the best combination of all the thingsI’m crazy about. It’s the maximum of creativefreedom that you can possibly get inprofessional photography. If you have agood idea and you manage to assure thatthe artists can trust you, you can get themto do pretty much everything. And I meanthis in the most innocent of ways.” he38 Intake #2

DavidBienewinks. It was Biene’s enthusiasm for the musicfrom the 40’s and 50’s that drove him tohis first hot rod weekender. But what hefound there was more than that. Even morethan the desperate tunes, it was the atmospherethat immediately got him by the ballsand fuelled his passion. „There’s somethingin the air — besides oil and gasoline — it’sthe spirit, it’s people’s real, honest passionwhich fires competition while offering greatdynamics and challenging one’s creativity.Especially during quarter-mile races andcar-meetings, I almost feel like I fall intosome kind of trance or something... Justrunning around, being in my own world ofamazing images, searching for THE photo, you know.“ It’s hard to ignore the spark inhis eyes, suddenly I think of ghost flames...Fortunately for us, this search he is speakingof has been successful more than once.Currently, David is about to finish the workon his first book, an intimate view on retrocults. The book will be out in early 2008. Ifyou look at David’s photos in this issue, you’ll see his passion for all the good olestuff. And what you’ll also see is that forhim it is more than a job. The man shootsphotos like Cole Foster kustomizes cars:chopped and channeled, lowered and dechromed, nosed and decked, hope and glory, rise and fall, rock and roll: David Bieneknows them all. He loves it. He shoots it.And he lives it. David Biene lives and worksin Berlin.www.david-biene.de ✩ contact@david-biene.demyspace.com/davidbiene40 Intake #2 Intake #2 41
