Door-<strong>to</strong>-Door ServicesDial-a-RideDial-a-Ride is a door-<strong>to</strong>-door free transport service for people withdisabilities with a permanent or long-term disability that s<strong>to</strong>ps themfrom us<strong>in</strong>g other public transport.It can be used for go<strong>in</strong>g shopp<strong>in</strong>g, visit<strong>in</strong>g friends, family, college,doc<strong>to</strong>rs, dental appo<strong>in</strong>tments and go<strong>in</strong>g out at night. Community <strong>Transport</strong>Hospital <strong>Transport</strong> Services (Mayday University Hospital)The Patient <strong>Transport</strong> Service (PTS) is run separately from theAccident & Emergency service which deals with 999 calls. This service is only forsituations that are not emergencies. Travel support for children and young people withSpecial Educational NeedsSome children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) may beeligible for travel support.The council expects that most parents and carers will want <strong>to</strong> make their ownarrangements for the journey <strong>to</strong> and from school. The council also wishes <strong>to</strong>encourage young people <strong>to</strong> be as <strong>in</strong>dependent as possible.The council will offer support where it is clear that children or young people wouldbe unable <strong>to</strong> attend school without it. Travel support can take various forms:• free travel permits for public transport;• adjustments <strong>to</strong> school hours so that parents or carers can drop off or collect;• a mileage allowance for car journeys over the statu<strong>to</strong>ry walk<strong>in</strong>g distance;• transport (eg: m<strong>in</strong>ibus, taxi or specialist vehicle) from home <strong>to</strong> school.Parental preference and transportIf parents or carers choose <strong>to</strong> send their child <strong>to</strong> a school other than the nearestsuitable school, the council will not provide travel support.Assessment and reviewIf you th<strong>in</strong>k you may be eligible for travel support of some k<strong>in</strong>d, you can makean application <strong>to</strong> the council. Applications are available from the SEN team orthrough the council website. The SEN team will assess your needs by look<strong>in</strong>g atthe <strong>in</strong>formation on your application aga<strong>in</strong>st the council’s policy on home-<strong>to</strong>-schooltravel support.
