HITCHIN GIRLS' SCHOOL<strong>GCSE</strong> 2011A Celebration Of SuccessWe are delighted to present a <strong>celebration</strong> <strong>of</strong> our <strong>GCSE</strong> <strong>success</strong>es to you.The main headlines are:89% <strong>of</strong> our students achieved 5 A*-C grades with 81% achieving 5 A*-C grades including English andMathematics.39% <strong>of</strong> the grades achieved this year were at A and A*.99.5% achieved 5 or more A*-G grades.38% <strong>of</strong> our students achieved 5 or more A or A* grades.Every year, alongside the overall achievements <strong>of</strong> the year group, there are always many personal <strong>success</strong>stories. Individual <strong>success</strong> will mean different things to different students. For some this means achievingthe top grades, for others it is about achieving above their targets and for some it is about having overcomea variety <strong>of</strong> difficulties or situations which may have been challenging over the period <strong>of</strong> study.It is appropriate at this time also to thank all our staff for the time they have invested in achieving theseresults with their students as well as acknowledging the huge support that parents have given during thepast two years.I <strong>of</strong>fer my sincerest congratulations to all our students for their <strong>GCSE</strong> results in 2011.Frances ManningHeadteacherBack in Sixth Form and celebrating their results. Subject ReportsOur subject area reports highlight notable subject achievements <strong>of</strong> particular students, whilst celebrating theachievements <strong>of</strong> those students already named and the year group as a whole..MathematicsWe are delighted with the <strong>GCSE</strong> results this year which are 21% above the national A*-C rate. The studentsachieved a tremendous 29 A* grades. We are also very pleased that every single student passed their Mathsexam. Ravina Parmar, Cynthia Ng, Keziah Powell, Gurpreet Reehal and Sophie Rose deserve a special mentionfor exceeding their target grade. Well done to all.EnglishThe English department would like to <strong>of</strong>fer huge congratulations to last year’s, Year 11 students on someoutstanding results. 96% achieved a grade A-C in English Language with 44% gaining A* or A grade which isfantastic and an improvement on the 2010 results. 91% achieved grade A*-C in English Literature. Specialmention to Sidney Nurthen for working particularly hard to achieve her high grade.ScienceThe <strong>GCSE</strong> Science results were our second best ever, so congratulations go to all <strong>of</strong> the staff and studentsinvolved. In Triple Science, eight girls gained three A* grades and we gained 49 A* grades overall. In CoreScience, there were 13 A* grades. Additional Science also produced 14 A* grades including Annabel Forde whostarted Year 11 in a lower group and was only predicted a C. All students put a great deal <strong>of</strong> effort into producingthese grades and they fully deserve their praise.ArtWe were delighted with the hard work and enthusiasm <strong>of</strong> our <strong>GCSE</strong> candidates who achieved over 90% A*-Cgrades. Well done to Rebecca Miles, Jadine Bulley, Abbie Chapman, Chantal Taylor and Rebecca Barnard forexceeding target grades. Special mention must go to Elizabeth Horner who achieved 100% in both Artcomponents.BusinessWell done to all our Business <strong>GCSE</strong> students. Of particular note are Sophie Rose and Grace Mann whose resultsdemonstrate the dedication and hard work which led them to exceed expectations in gaining A grades. Also, welldone to Chelsea Taylor for her sustained hard work and development <strong>of</strong> independent study skills that earned her aBusiness Qualification.Classical Civilisation and LatinLatin: All students deserve congratulations for achieving not only their Latin Language qualifications but alsotheir Latin Literature. Special mention must go to Alice Thorp who achieved 100% in all her examinationsacross the two Latin qualifications. All students achieved an A grade or higher in at least one paper, a first for theClassics Department. Ashara Taylor should be congratulated on exceeding her target grade by two in LatinLiterature.Classical Civilisation: Congratulations to all students and particularly to Phoebe Allard, Beth Horner and AnnaHall who gained full marks for the Pompeii module.Design Technology (Graphic Products, Food, Textiles and Resistant Materials)The Department is extremely pleased with the performance <strong>of</strong> our students this year. Having worked really hard tomeet the requirements <strong>of</strong> the new specification and controlled assessment task 97% <strong>of</strong> the girls achieved grades*A-C. A special mention must go to Alice Thorpe who achieved full marks in her controlled assessment task andwritten examination. It was a tough year, with much panicking and tears towards the end (you know who youare!) but all the effort was well worth it. Congratulations and best wishes for the future from all your D&Tteachers.DramaThe Drama Department congratulates its students on their results. Well done for all the hard work tackling a newOCR <strong>GCSE</strong> specification and particularly to Nicola Warner and Annabelle Mackinnon-Austin for their outstandingachievement.


GeographyStaffs were very pleased with the hard work, effort and enthusiasm shown by the Geography students. Many<strong>of</strong> you will remember the fieldtrip to Norfolk which was excellent because <strong>of</strong> the students who attended.Congratulations to Chantel Brewster, Sophie Morris, Tate Jack, Erin Jones, and Ravina Parmar who achievedone grade higher than their target. Well done to a fantastic year group!Health and Social CareCongratulations to the Year 11 Health and Social Care students who achieved some excellent results thisyear. 86.2% achieved A*-C grades and just under 40% gained A*-A grades. The mature attitude andindependent approach they adopted will stand them in very good stead for their future. A special mentionshould go to Millie Brodie, Annie Roberts, Megan Kerr-Barr, Keziah Powell, Heather Prime and LauraSheldrick who all achieved double A grades!HistoryCongratulations to all students who worked so hard in History. Especially well done to Rebecca Hankin, AliceThorp, Anna Hall, Abigail Bevan, Claire McQue and Sarah Timson who all worked especially hard to achieveA* grades.Modern Foreign LanguagesThe department was very pleased with the French results under the new 60% controlled assessment format.Students’ hard work was reflected in their results: 39/38 students achieved an A*-A in Writing component and31/84 achieved A*-A in the Speaking component. Well done to all those girls, many <strong>of</strong> whom exceeded gradepredictions. 33 students achieved an A*-A grade overall which is a fantastic outcome. Special mention must bemade <strong>of</strong> Tamsin Forde, who achieved full marks in the Higher Reading paper.Congratulations to the girls sitting German; in particular, well done to Bethany Johnson for her A grade in theHigher Reading. Spanish students are to be congratulated for following the course in their own time, with allstudents passing with a C or above and five <strong>of</strong> the seven students gaining an A* or A grade. Gabriela Spiro -Larrea <strong>of</strong> Year 9, gained A* in the Higher Reading. Well done!MusicThe Music department is extremely proud <strong>of</strong> the results their students gained in the summer examinations. At<strong>GCSE</strong> level we were delighted by the 97% A*-C pass rate. The department achieved 55% A*-A grades. Wewould like to congratulate all <strong>of</strong> our students for their hard work, attainment and support in our extra-curricularclubs.Philosophy and EthicsCongratulations to our students for another outstanding set <strong>of</strong> results with 100% A*-C grades. We areespecially proud <strong>of</strong> the girls for performing so well and for the exceptional 74% A* and A grades. Specialcongratulations to Stevie Gibbs and Grace Mann for exceeding their target grades. A very impressiveperformance by all.Physical Education and DanceIn the Short Course examination, 80% <strong>of</strong> students achieved grades A*-C with many individual <strong>success</strong>es andwith 21% <strong>of</strong> students achieving an A or A* grade. In the Full Course, 81% achieved A*-C grades with 26% <strong>of</strong>the group achieving A or A* grade. Congratulations to Millie Brodie and Charlotte Reid who achieved A* gradein their written paper.Also congratulations to Harriet Field, Sidney Nurthen and Charlotte Reid who achieved an A* grade in thepractical component <strong>of</strong> the full course. In <strong>GCSE</strong> Dance, 92% <strong>of</strong> students achieved A*-C with 42% achieving Aor A* grades. The choreography was once again <strong>of</strong> a very high standard from the group with 58% <strong>of</strong> thestudents also achieving an A or A* on the written paper. Special mention to Hanna Paisley who achieved A* inthe written examination. Congratulations to Kennedy Hare, Georgia Sheehan and Hannah Sheehan whoachieved an A or A* grade on all three practical components.
