Student Handbook 2010-2013ST. JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLESt. John Baptist de La Salle (1651-1719) wasa Catholic priest who founded a religiouscongregation of lay school teachers called theBrothers of Christian Schools (in thePhilippines, they are more popularly known asthe De La Salle Brothers) in Rheims, France, over 300 years ago. He was canonized in1900 and was proclaimed as the Patron Saint of Christian Teachers in1950.Despite a comfortable, respectable and promising life as a priest, St. LaSalle sought for a more meaningful way to serve God. Consequently,in 1679, at the age of 28, he took up the challenge of setting upgratuitous schools for the poor. In the succeeding year, he brought intohis own home the school teachers amidst criticisms from his ownfamily. He then spent most of his time forming them into a genuinecommunity with a common spirit and purpose. The strength of St. LaSalle’s commitment to the cause of educating the poor and ensuringthe availability of religiously-motivated lay teachers led him to give uphis high position as a canon in the Cathedral of Rheims, as well as hisother financial assets. St. La Salle also had the unique ability ofconverting traditional methods of teaching into practical strategies thatwere more useful to the type of students in his schools and the limitedresources of the schools. At the time of St. La Salle’s death 40 yearslater, his initial efforts had led to the creation of 27 houses and 274brothers serving 9,000 students.Like most charitable causes, St. La Salle’s work was constantlychallenged by opposition, controversy and betrayal. However, healways faced each trial with prayer and penance.2 | Your Family and Home

De La Salle Health Sciences InstituteIn the rule book written by St. La Salle, he cited the three essentialelements that form the spirit of the Institute of Christian Brothers: aspirit of FAITH, an ardent ZEAL for the instruction of children, andlastly, a true spirit of COMMUNITY.The WORKS of St. John Baptist de La Salle were primarilycharacterized by a concern for the disadvantaged, a sensitivity to socialissues, quality teaching with a practical orientation, and elevation of thedespised function of a school teachers to a vocation with a lifetimecommitment. His LIFE was filled with meditation and prayer, and a very strong faithin God. And as a loyal and committed servant of God, St. La Sallewould often be heard saying these words:Domine, opus tuum – Lord, the work is yours.(Main Reference: Luke Salm,FSC.
