JerryBarnhart overcame the obstaclesof a difficult match to regainhis title of USPSA LimitedChampion. Jerry had won thefirst Limited Championship in1993, but Rob Leatham tookthe second championship titlein 1994. When the final scoreswere tallied, Jerry hadPhoto by Roger L. Todd Jarrett, DougKoenig, and Jethro Dionisiofilled out the list of the top five. The women's title was wonby Sharon Edington in a contestthat was very close for thefirst two days, but the complexstages took their toll on thecompetition. The first few daysof the women's competition wasan up-and-down affair betweenSharon and Shirley Hamilton, but gun trouble and difficultstages knocked Shirley out offirst place as the match progressed.A strong finish by LisaMunson secured second placefor her with Shirley, KippiBoykin, and Carina Burnsrounding out the top fivewomen.Page 24 Janualy/February 1996
The weather before thematch was quite nice, but thatchanged on the first day of competition.Toward noon heavyrain started falling from theovercast skies, forcing a cancellationof the after-noon shootingbecause it was impossible tokeep targets dry and intact.Match Director Andy Hollarposted a new squad schedulewhich had all the Tuesday afternoonshooters coming backWednesday morning toshoot two days' worth ofstages in one day. Witha turnout of 295 shootersin a squad schedulestructured to accommodate432 shooters, thematch was back onschedule by noonWednesday. Intermittentrain hampered thematch for the rest of theweek, but there were nomore delays despite lowtemperatures. Mostshooters stayed bundledup in parkas untilit was their time toshoot, and the departmentstores in Quincy probablydid a brisk business in coats, gloves and hand-warmers forthe many who had come preparedfor warmer weather. As with last year, the stagesused more shooting areas andfewer shooting boxes. Theshooting area method is a double-edgedsword, however, sinceit provides the shooter withmore latitude to solve theshooting problem but alsomakes it difficult for the stagedesigner to make it "singlestackneutral." Overall, theshooters said they liked theshooting area concept. Manyshooters stated after the matchthat they initially thought thematch would be easy to shootbut found out differently whenthey arrived at the stages andsaw how the targets wereplaced. More than a few goodshooters fell victim to the difficultplacement.THE FIRST DAYThe Men's Super Squad beganthe match on Stage 2,Ported View.
