EISTEDDFOD GENEDLAETHOL CYMRUNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD OF WALESTHE EISTEDDFOD – SOME FACTS• The first Eisteddfod was held in 1176 in Cardigan.• It is the biggest travelling festival in Europe.• Over 160,000 people attend each year from all over theworld.• It is the second biggest outside filming for the BBC beingbeaten only by the tennis at Wimbledon.• The venue changes every year – this year it is South Wales,next year it will be held in Wrexham North Wales.• It’s a celebration <strong>of</strong> Welsh Language arts and culture.• You don’t need to speak Welsh to join in with the fun.


WHAT HAPPENS AT THE EISTEDDFOD?There will be a choice <strong>of</strong> food and drink available, and you will beable to see children and adults singing, dancing, music, writing,art and craft. There is a Poetry competition & presentation <strong>of</strong> theBardic Chair, Welsh learner <strong>of</strong> the Year etc.You can buy t shirts, clothes, books, and loads <strong>of</strong> other things.The Newport Gwent Dragons are doing rugby training for childrenevery day and there is a beach for the children to play on.You can also spot lots <strong>of</strong> famous Welsh people walking about theMaes.WHERE IS IT?The Eisteddfod will be held at The Works site in Ebbw Vale,Blaenau Gwent, South Wales, on the site <strong>of</strong> the formersteelworks at the bottom <strong>of</strong> the valley.HOW DO I GET THERE?You can catch a train to the Parkway Ebbw Vale or follow signs ifcoming by road to a Park and Ride outside Ebbw Vale and jumpon a bus to take you to the site.


WHEN IS IT?31st July – 7th August 2010. It opens at 9am and closes in theevening although you can go to the main tent to see peopleperforming. HOW MUCH IS IT TO GET IN?Adults - £15.00 - these tickets allow entry to the Eisteddfodfield (known as the “Maes” in Welsh). You may also enter theMain Pavilion during the day with these tickets but your seat isunreserved. If you wish to book a reserved seat then you shouldbuy a Pavilion (Day) ticket.Pavilion (Day) Ticket - £16.00The following concessions for OAPs/Students and Children areavailable at the Main Entrance on the day. Entrances to theEisteddfod field open from 8.00am. The prices will be as follows:• OAPs (aged 65 years and over) - £13.00• Students - Only valid with a Students Union Card - £9.00• Children aged between 12 and 18 - £9.00• Children aged between 3 and 12 - £3.00• Children under the age <strong>of</strong> 3 - FreeYou may also call our Ticket Line to purchase tickets on (0845)122 1176 (Monday to Friday 10.00am - 4.00pm)WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET THERE / WHO DO I LOOKFOR?If you are Deaf come to the main entrance and we will have 2BSL Interpreters there to go around the Maes with you and helpyou communicate. If you are visually impaired you can ask fora sighted guide at the main entrance.
