COMPOUNDS1. COMPOUND NOUNSNote: compound nouns are usually written either as two separate words or as one word; hensare very rarely used. There are no precise rules as to the spelling of compound nouns, but the following should beremembered:1) when two short nouns are joined together, they form one word without a hyphen, e.g. aschoolboy,2) when we form compound nouns with the use of self- (self-education) or verb + particle(make-up) we usually use a hyphen;3) when a compound is accepted as a single word, it can be written either as one word, two separate words or with the hyphen. The tendency, especially after a period of timewhen the word has been used, is to avoid hyphens where possible.EXERCISE 183Combine the words in capital letters with each word of the list below it, puttingit either before or after according to the meaning.
