8 The GrapevineJune 27 - July 11, 2013Nova Scotia’s FirstOrganic WineryReaches MilestoneIn 2004, one of Canada’s bestknownand most experiencedmakers of sparkling wine movedto the Annapolis Valley from British Columbia,with stints along with way in the wineregions of Australia, California and Ontario.His mission when he landed here was tostart Nova Scotia’s first certified organicwinery, L’Acadie Vineyards.Now, nine years later, Bruce Ewert hasachieved a big milestone. At full ripeness, the grape isactually reddish-blue in colour, due to itsparentage but it produces a wonderfullycomplex white wine. This intense andsweetly perfumed wine carries flavoursof tropical fruit and has excellent acidity,which makes it perfect to enjoy with spicyfoods. More local wineries are working withthis grape now, and you’ll find that manywinemakers have used a little bit of Muscatin their Tidal Bay blend. If you would like tolearn more about this grape, Let’s Go WineTasting is holding a special and fun eveningof discovering Muscat wines with a fun testfor the nose and palate! Most babies need a lot of gear to endure a seated restaurant meal,and as I was packing up, I distractedly packed my iTouch in a front pocket of my backpack.Unfortunately, I forgot to zip up that pocket and later realized that the iTouch hadfallen out on my way to our car. Sadness! I went into every store between the restaurantand the place that I'd parked to see if it had been turned in, and everyone was as helpfulas they could be. But my hope really faded after I could see (via Apple's very cool "iCloud"technology) that someone had connected it to wifi and used it downtown since I'd lostit and hadn't contacted me despite the "lost/call me" message I'd put on the screen (viaiCloud). I beat myself up for my mistake, and mourned the lost pictures, videos and soundrecordings of my baby's first year.Five days later I got a call from the wonderful staff at Cochrane's Pharmasave! One of theirstaff had found my iTouch outside the store just after I'd dropped it. The battery died beforethey could figure out a way to contact me. It was five days later that in talking about itin the store, a staff member whom I'd asked about it learned that it HAD been found—andcalled me right away. Hooray! While setting up forthe Thursday night show, the bar was basically empty except forone drunk old-timer at the bar. We didn’t even get the speakershooked up before he started to heckle us. Thebartender took out a Bic lighter and lit the ends of the tissue. Theband members doubled over in belly laughs as the old-timer triedto beat out the fire on the side of his head.
