During this time an extraordinary changecame over <strong>the</strong> Jewish people. Previously, <strong>the</strong>y had been to an alarming extent idolaters, andoutbreaking violators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>. But after <strong>the</strong>ir return from Babylon <strong>the</strong>y were neverguilty <strong>of</strong> idolatry to any extent, <strong>the</strong> chastisement <strong>of</strong> that captivity effecting a cure <strong>of</strong> this evil. 1In like manner did <strong>the</strong>y change <strong>the</strong>ir conduct relative to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>; and during this period<strong>the</strong>y loaded <strong>the</strong> Sabbatic institution with <strong>the</strong> most burdensome and rigorous ordinances. Abrief survey <strong>of</strong> this period must suffice. Under <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Antiochus Epiphanes, <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong>Syria, B.C. 170, <strong>the</strong> Jews were greatly oppressed."King Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom, that all should be one people, and every one should leave his laws: so all <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n agreed according to <strong>the</strong>commandment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king. Yea, many also <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Israelites consented to hisreligion, and sacrificed unto idols, and pr<strong>of</strong>aned <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>." 2The greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrews remained faithfull to God, and, as a consequence, wereobliged to flee for <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Thus <strong>the</strong> historian continues:"Then many that sought after justice and judgment went down into <strong>the</strong>wilderness, to dwell <strong>the</strong>re: both <strong>the</strong>y, and <strong>the</strong>ir children, and <strong>the</strong>ir wives, and<strong>the</strong>ir cattle; because afflictions increased sore upon <strong>the</strong>m. Now when it wastold <strong>the</strong> king's servants, and <strong>the</strong> host that was at Jerusalem, in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> David, that certain men, who had broken <strong>the</strong> king's commandment, were gone downinto <strong>the</strong> secret places in <strong>the</strong> wilderness, <strong>the</strong>y pursued after <strong>the</strong>m a greatnumber, and having overtaken <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y camped against <strong>the</strong>m, and made waragainst <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> day. And <strong>the</strong>y said unto <strong>the</strong>m, Let that which yehave done hi<strong>the</strong>rto suffice; come forth, and do according to <strong>the</strong> commandment<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king, and ye shall live. But <strong>the</strong>y said, We will not come forth, nei<strong>the</strong>rwill we do <strong>the</strong> king's commandment, to pr<strong>of</strong>ane <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong> day. So <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ygave <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> battle with all speed. Howbeit <strong>the</strong>y answered <strong>the</strong>m not, nei<strong>the</strong>rcast <strong>the</strong>y a stone at <strong>the</strong>m, nor stopped <strong>the</strong> places where <strong>the</strong>y lay hid. But said,Let us die all in our innocency: heaven and earth shall testify for us, that ye putus to death wrongfully. So <strong>the</strong>y rose up against <strong>the</strong>m in battle on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>,and <strong>the</strong>y slew <strong>the</strong>m, with <strong>the</strong>ir wives and children, and <strong>the</strong>ir cattle, to <strong>the</strong>number <strong>of</strong> a thousand people." 3 62
