August 2013 EditionHeralding the News of theFirst United Methodist Church of Oviedo“Go and make disciples . . .” (Matthew 28:19)The heart and soul of the church is wrapped up in these words. The job ofthe church is very simple. I am going to sum it up in four words. Theyare; Reach, Connect, Form and Send.As we are preparing for Fall programs, the idea of “form” fills my thoughts. The wordimplies that we are engaged in the process of developing a growing and transformingrelationship with Christ. What does this imply? It means that we do not compartmentalize our relationship with Christ into a one-houra-weekcommitment. We must allow Christ to speak to every part of our being. Thattakes time.My sister has, to some degree, “mastered” playing the piano. She can sit down andplay without any sheet music, and people marvel at her ability. But that came at greatcosts. As a child, when all of the other kids were outside playing, Lenee was sitting atthe piano practicing. She spent one hour each day playing scales, practicing her music, preparing for her piano lessons. She would cry and ask Mom to let her go early, butMom knew Lenee had a gift that she could use for the rest of her life. Today, Lenee isthankful for those long hard hours of work. However, her work is not done. Each dayshe finds time to review music, keeping it fresh in her mind. She is so practiced thatthe music flows out of her fingers. Our relationship with Christ is something that we develop over time, but there is nevera time when we will not need to focus on spiritual formation.Small group Bible Studies are a great place to focus on our becoming a “disciple.” Iwould encourage everyone to find that place where they can continue to be challengedto grow in Christ.
