SHARING our HOPEMessengers of Hopeb y D i a n e T h u r b e rOn the last Sabbath afternoon of each month a group of women from the Glendale Church in Indianapolisvisit the Julian Center, a safe shelter for abused women and children. According to Paulette Taylor, theGlendale Church women’s ministries director, the Julian Center provides “phenomenal, state-of-the-artprotection and assistance.” The shelter temporarily houses women and their children who also receive meals, counselingservices, clothing and so much more. This is the third year the GlendaleChurch women will visit the JulianCenter residents. “What a wonderfulgroup of women!” remarks Paulette.“These ladies have really specialneeds, and we wanted to service theirspiritual growth and developmentby initiating a monthly Bible study,”shares Paulette. “We discovered, though, after a few months, that theladies responded more to a realisticapproach, so we try to reach the ladiesin ways they can directly relate to.”The Glendale Church women’sgroup follows a special theme at eachsession. One month they discussed“Hope in Jesus.” Other topics include“Prayer Life,” “The Blessed Love ofJesus,” and “Real Strength Found in the Lord.” Paulettesays “many of the ladies already have knowledge of theLord, but need the communion found only in study, discussion, sharing and meditation on the Lord and all Hecan do for them.”The visiting group of women varies each month. Andsome Sabbaths, violin music is provided by Somer Taylor, aGlendale Church women’s ministries committee member.Other times, Paulette visits alone. She says, “That is fine, because I believe in these ladies and truly love them as myChristian sisters. I want to nurture their spiritual growthand personal development because they deserve it.”The outreach session normally beginsat 3:00 p.m. and usually lasts 30to 45 minutes. If some of the JulianCenter ladies have a lot to discuss orif there are many who want to testify, the session continues longer. Paulettesays a few times they stayed until dinnertime.“Sometimes the ladies justdid not want us to leave. The HolySpirit was really with us those Sabbaths, even more than usual.” Sheadds, “The testimony and sharingtime in each outreach session is priceless.... God is doing a mighty work atthe Center, and we are so pleased to bea part of it.” Several ladies have askedabout the church they represent andinquired about coming to services.Participating in this outreach ministry has changed thelives of not only those at the Julian Center but also themessengers of hope from the Glendale Church. Some haveexpressed to Paulette that the outreach experience hasstrengthened them spiritually. As for Paulette, she says, “Ihave been blessed many, many times by the light I see in theladies’ faces and eyes as we express hope in the Lord, andassure them that no matter what they have been throughHe is ALWAYS there for them, no matter what.”Diane Thurber is the assistant communication director of the Lake UnionConference.12 | Ma r c h 2 0 0 8 • L a k e U n i o n H e r a l d T h e Lake Union Herald is available online.
