Hospital VolunteerAuthors Children’sBook About GriefWhen families experience a miscarriage,stillbirth or neonatal death, thereare many places they can turn to forsupport and guidance indealing with their grief.Support groups,books, counselors areall readily available forparents and grandparents.But for young children,resources are sparse.Cathy Blanford calls theseyoung siblings the “forgottenmourners.”Blanford has seenfirsthand the devastatingeffects these types of losshave on young children.She volunteers as abereavement counselorfor Still Missed, a supportprogram at AdventistHinsdale Hospital forfamilies who experiencepregnancy loss.“Many times, parentsare so overwhelmed withtheir own sorrow, they have no capacityor energy to deal with their other children,”Blanford said. “But little onesoverhear things and pick up vibes, andwithout concrete information, childrencan experience disturbing feelingsinvolving fear, guilt and confusion.”Recognizing the need, Blanforddecided to write a book titled “SomethingHappened.” It tells the story of amother, father and a little boy who arelooking forward to the birth of a newbaby. Theuniversity’s new GraduateScholarship Program willbe the first universitywideprogram to offerscholarships to eligiblestudents in most entrylevelgraduate programs.The graduate scholarshipswill offer, for thosewho qualify, an overallpercentage discount onthe specific tuition forthat student’s program,based on the student’s GRE or GMATscores.G. Lyndon Furst, who retired inDecember as Andrews University’sdean of Graduate Studies, said the newscholarship has been a dream of hissince he first assumed the position in2002. “Nearly 40 percent of Andrewsstudents are in the School of GraduateStudies,” according to Furst. “Thisnew scholarship program demonstrateshow important graduate education isto Andrews.”The scholarships are available tomaster’s level students accepted intoprograms which require a GRE orGMAT, or first-time graduate studentsin advanced programs (for two yearsonly), who enroll for the first time forthe 2008–2009 term and who havecurrent (within five years) GRE (orGMAT for School of Business students)scores at the time of enrollment.The Graduate Scholarship Programwill not be available to most doctoralstudents or to students in programswith subsidized tuition rates, such assome of those within the Seventh-dayAdventist Theological Seminary atAndrews.“The graduate scholarship givesstudents who want to attend gradschool in the context of a Christianworldview a little bit more assistance,”said Furst. “It’s a major step forwardfor the university in making gradschool more affordable.”Robert Moncrieff, student news writer,University RelationsVi s i t w w w.
