Maintenance Guide KatadynVario1. Intake Prefilter strainer: This can clog inn very dirty water, or if it is in contact with bottomsediment or vegetation in a lakeor stream. If pump output decreases, check this first. Look at thestrainer closely-------it may not appear to be clogged, but it can bee glued shut with clear algae.Rinse thestrainer in water to remove any particles that may be caught in the strainer. For a morethoroughh cleaning, remove the prefilter fromthe input hose and clean with water and a toothbrush.Reassemble. Apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the strainer barb to ease assembly.2. If unit pumps easily, but nowater flows: (The pump doesn’t prime) pMake sure prefilter is submerged.Make sure that hoses are not blocked or pinched. (rarely, some creature may y chew a hole in theintake hose-----this will also affect priming). .Open upthe Vario, like you aregoing to adjust the settings, by holding the lower part of the Vario inone hand and turning the upper part aboutt 1/8 turn. The upper part p (pump head) will then lift upand off.Turn thepump-headupside down. With the inlet hosein water, pump p this until water is flowing ffreely. If this doesn’t work, fill the pump-head partly with water, and then pump until it is drawingwaternormally. You have now removed the air bubble or silt particle that was not allowing a thee intake valves to close. Then re-assemble.If the above suggestions do not prime your Vario, you may have a damaged o-ring on one of thepump pistons. Follow instructions in 4. There is a pack of replacement o-ringss that come with theVario. Lube any 0-ring you arereplacing with silicon lube.

Maintenance Guide KatadynVario3. Clogging and slow water output. If you operatingthe Vario in i Longer Life mode, certain typesof dirty water can clog the ceramic prefilter in less than one gallon. The clues to look for here are:a. Output of water from the filter slows considerably.b. Pumping resistance may increase.c. If youcontinue pumping: water may seep or spray out from where the Vario screws together.d. If youare not sure if the ceramic is clogged: turn theceramic prefilter to Faster Flow setting andthen re-assemble and test the Vario. If it now pumps easily, the ceramic is clogged.Clean the Ceramic Prefilter!Open upthe Vario and clean the ceramic prefilter____________>with thegreen cleaning pad provided. Thee ceramic may becleaned in either dirty or clean water up to 200 times. Clean thetop of the ceramic until a lighterr color appears, then rinse andreassemble. Please note that there is a o-ring on the base of theceramic disk that may be dislodged in aggressive cleaning.Put someof the silicon lubricantt from the provided tubeon the o-ring thatt sets on the top of the lower sectionn of the Vario.___> Re-normal pump rate when flow has assemble and pumpp slowly to get water started, then resumebegun.4. If handle is hardto push orr if water leaks or sprays from around the pistons when pumping:Lubricateo-rings of pistons. Silicone lubricant is provided with your new unit.Remove the axle-pinfrom top cap by turning it 90° andpushing it out of its position. A coin can beused to turn the pin.Detach the translucent top cap andput aside. Grasp thepump handle and lift it upwards until the pistons come out of their position. Cleanexcess build-up fromblack rubber o-rings on pistons. Place a small amount of f siliconelubricant all the wayaround theo-rings. Re-assemble.Note: Whenn reassembling:carefullyinsert pistons, making sure to not pinch o-rings. When re-inserting the axle-pin make sure itis pushed all the way through the housing and turned to locked position.

However as atemporary solution in the field, remove the cartridge and swish it around a in water. Makesureuntreated water does not contact the cartridge output barb. If flow is not restored, replace cartridge.7. Reinstalling the glass-fiber cartridge: cWhen reinstalling this cartridge turnn it until the cartridgedrops into the correct position, when the five notches inits top are filled by thee five black flanges finside the lower part of the Vario housing. The photo above that shows s the ceramic disk also showsproper positioning of the glass-fibereplaced thecartridge correctly.cartridge. If you can not get the t Vario to re-assemble, mostlikely you have not Refill of Carbon CartridgeRemove red cover on glass-fiber filter cartridge and green foam underneath too reveal activatedcarbon.2) Rinseinside of cartridge withfiltered water. Do not remove white filter disc from the bottom of thecylinder.3) Openpackage of activated carbon and pour into the cartridge. Cover with new green foam andred lid.
