<strong>National</strong> Institute of <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Family Welfare1.0 INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALEAbout the InstituteThe <strong>National</strong> Institute of <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Family Welfare (NIHFW) is a premierautonomous Institute, funded by the Ministry of <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Family Welfare, Government ofIndia. It has kept pace with the new thinking <strong>and</strong> substantially contributed to the healthmanpower development in the country. NIHFW serves as an apex ‘technical institute’ aswell as a ‘think tank’ to promote national health <strong>and</strong> family welfare programmes in thecountry through education <strong>and</strong> training, research <strong>and</strong> evaluation, consultancy <strong>and</strong> advisoryservices, specialized projects, etc. The thrust areas of the Institute include health <strong>and</strong> relatedpolicies, public health management <strong>and</strong> others.Various educational activities <strong>for</strong>m the core of NIHFW. MD in Community <strong>Health</strong>Administration <strong>and</strong> Diploma in <strong>Health</strong> Administration offered in affiliation with Universityof Delhi are the most prestigious courses. The Post Graduate Diploma in <strong>Health</strong> Managementstarted in 2008-09 in collaboration with MOHFW has gained popularity nationwide.In order to facilitate continuous upgradation of knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills of various healthpersonnel across the country, the NIHFW has launched the following courses throughdistance learning mode:1. Post Graduate Diploma in <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> Family Welfare Management2. Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management3. Post Graduate Diploma in <strong>Health</strong> Promotion2.0 HEALTH PROMOTIONBackgroundDuring the last five decades, India has made an unprecedented progress in thehealth sector <strong>and</strong> health indicators. Yet, a lot needs to be achieved towards controllingthe communicable diseases, reducing infant mortality, maternal mortality <strong>and</strong> to raise thenutritional status of children <strong>and</strong> women. Further, the emerging challenge related to thelifestyle diseases/non-communicable diseases, requires the strategies different from theconventional ones, used to tackle communicable diseases. This challenge can be addressedthrough capacity building of the health personnel in initiating strong health promotionalinterventions to bring sustained change in the behaviour of the community in respect of riskfactors.The lifestyle diseases have a strong association with the way people live their lives.Such diseases have defied the conventional public health measures like environmentalsanitation, immunization, vector control <strong>and</strong> many others. <strong>Health</strong> promotion strategies havebeen effective in prevention <strong>and</strong> control of these diseases as evident from the statistics from the1
