Federal PartnershipsStudents from across the countryhave an opportunity to gain hands-onexperience in federal agencies. Manyutilize the experience to join federalagencies upon graduation.Studies show that internships provide the best return on investmentfor recruiting new talent to an organization. Intern recruits tend tostay with their employers longer, minimizing the impact of turnoveron the organization. For the last eight years, The WashingtonCenter has partnered with numerous federal agencies to address theworkforce planning challenges the federal government faces. The Washington Center has been a link for the federal governmentto a diverse, highly talented pool of candidates who are interestedin becoming the next generation of public servants. In fact, 20 to 25percent of Washington Center students interning in federal agenciesare converted to full-time employment, while the average conversionrate in the federal government is 6 percent. Our internship programs are a distinctive combination of workforcetraining, experiential education, and leadership developmentdesigned specifically for the critical role federal agencies play inattracting a highly qualified and diverse future workforce. As aresult, participants gain relevant “real world” work experience, makecontacts critical to developing their professional network, and learnto tie classroom learning with their future career. Students alsogain a better understanding and greater appreciation for the federalgovernment by exploring future career opportunities through thesetailored internship programs.Currently, The Washington Center partners withmany federal agencies, including:• Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)• Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)• Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)• Internal Revenue Service (IRS)• National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)• U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)• U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)• U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)Federal PartnershipsThe Washington Center | 2012 Scholarship Yearbook 55
