CHAPLAIN'S CORNERMs C O'GormanThe start of a new year usually brings a sense of new beginnings, a chance to start again when we feel we mighthave let ourselves down a bit last year, or perhaps excitement as we reflect on the successes of last year and howwe can raise things to an even higher level this year. I enjoy catching up on a movie or two over the summerholidays; it is a great way to avoid the heat even if the movie is a bit average, and these holidays were noexception (both the heat and the movies!).There seemed to be a lot of good movies to choose from this summer. Firstly, there was The Hobbit, the story ofan epic journey of innocence triumphing over evil. Then I went to see Les Miserables, an incredible tale of grace.Hitchcock was great, with sterling performances from two great actors. One that you might have seen if there areyounger children in the family was Wreck-it Ralph, a great movie for the start of a new year. If you did not get to it,it is a lovely animated picture about a classic ‘bad guy’ in a digital game who is tired of always being the bad guyand having no-one like him.He becomes jealous of “Fix-it Felix Jnr”, the hero of the game, and decides he would rather be a hero than a villain. So he decides to try to reinvent himself, and runs away from his own game for a while (it is just a story remember!).I will not tell you any more of the plot in case you want to see the movie sometime, but suffice it to say, Ralph doesnot find it easy to switch from being the villain to being the hero. He has a lot to learn along the way, but the goodnews is that he gets there in the end. Some of you may have started this year a little like ‘Wreck-it Ralph’, hoping to approach things in a more positiveand productive manner this year and that is a great mindset to adopt. If you have though, be aware it does nothappen easily, and you will find that as you implement those necessary changes in your life, there will be ups anddowns along the way, the old habits are hard to kick sometimes.I am reminded of Zacchaeus in Luke’s Gospel; the man who changed his life around so completely after Jesuscame to his place for lunch. Zacchaeus would have found it hard to suddenly do business in a completely honestway rather than cheating people when he could get away with it as he used to do. Something about meeting Jesusinspired him to make the changes. With God’s help lasting change is possible, so persevere in trying to changethings in your life; prayer and determination will help you get there. Remember, with God, all things are possible!HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLMrs A BennettQuote of the WeekAfter a failure, you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start again but after a success, you’re stuck with it.A very warm welcome to the 2013 Junior School year, with a special mention of our new families and theirdaughter(s) who have joined our Team Somerville. We look forward to working with your daughters in 2013. Thestaff will be actively assisting your daughters to settle in to their 2013 learning environment. The 4Rs of the Junior School are respect, Resilience, Relationships and Responsibility and these values underpinour daily work. In the Junior School students are actively engaged in activities encompassing teacher directed, individual and group work and student directed learning. Students are encouraged to accept the unknown, and itssubsequent challenges, which accompany learning, and be a risk taker. Resilience is essential to navigating our lifejourney, and in a positive supportive environment, we all feel less challenged by the unknown. Our Junior School Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 19 February, with refreshments available from6.00pm. More information will be forthcoming regarding this evening.Congratulations to Mrs Kristin Graham (previously Bragg) who was married during the school holidays.POINTS TO NOTE AND HELP YOU:PLEASE NOTE: The Junior School direct telephone line is 3033 9212.Student Absences - Please ring 3033 9212 between 8.00am and 9.00am to report student absences.Student Attendance Information - Please refer to p13 of the 2013 Family Handbook. The Junior School is not open before 8.00am. I trustthat your association with Somerville House will be both enjoyable and rewarding.Special welcome to Mr Tony Johnson who has been appointed Homeroom teacher for 7B and who will teachGeography, History, Science and Technology throughout the Middle School. It is also pleasing to see the return ofMs Jessica McLean after twelve months leave. Mrs Alana Walsh has moved from the Co-Curriculum office to theAdministration Assistant position located in the Middle School office and she has adapted well to her new role.Middle School started the academic year with excellent new facilities which include a new Middle School staffroomand amenities, new Heads of Year and Head of Middle School offices, interview room, additional Homeroom, spacious student change-room, and an outdoor area with seating and landscaping located between the VPACbuilding and D Block. Sails will be constructed over the next couple of weeks to provide better shade for MiddleSchool students. With 123 new students commencing in Middle School this year, a high priority for staff is to assist actively with thesmooth transition of these students into a happy and productive learning environment. A well-establishedorientation program is being implemented in the Middle School over the coming weeks, and students’ progress willcontinue to be monitored by Homeroom Teachers/Tutors and Heads of Year throughout the year. My appreciationis extended to all students, teachers and administrative staff for their valuable assistance . It is always pleasing tosee the support given to new students as they settle in to Somerville House.Even though problems are not anticipated, parents are urged to contact the relevant staff in the Middle School ifthey feel that their daughter’s anxiety levels are still uncomfortably high after a reasonable ‘settling-in’ period.Heads of Year will liaise with Homeroom Teachers/Tutors and contact parents if they identify any significantstudent difficulties. The number of new students entering Middle School is higher than normal, primarily because of the enrolment ofan additional Year 7 class this year. This is part of the School’s strategic plan to phase in additional Year 7 classesover the next couple of years to align with what is occurring in schools throughout Queensland. Somerville House iswell-placed to implement these changes successfully, having established a Middle School incorporating Years 7-9over eleven years ago.A special event for new boarders was held on the Australia Day holiday, and once again the staff present foundtheir contact with boarding families to be a valuable experience. Boarders contribute significantly to the ethos ofthe School, and these types of gatherings help to forge closer links between their homes and the School.Contacting StaffThe Family Handbook states that, depending on the issues encountered, Homeroom Teachers for Years 7 and 8and Tutors for Year 9, or the Heads of Year, are the first points of contact for parents. If parents have any doubtsabout who to contact, please phone or email the Middle School office (3248 9232) and information will beforwarded to the relevant staff member. For issues of an on-going psychological nature, Mrs Karon Graham, Dean of Students (3248 9295) can assist.5

For health-related issues, the Health Centre Sisters can be contacted on 3248 9275. Their purpose is to assist teachers in assessing students’ abilities in key curriculum areas and to designlessons accordingly. The information also helps with the identification of talented students and this is useful forteachers in preparing extension activities. The competition is fierce and we look forward to the final performances later in the term.On Thursday 31 January, the first of our 2013 Student Executive Leadership Training Programs takes place. These seminars and workshops provide the students with the opportunity to set their vision and goals for theyear. The formal induction of the Student Executive will occur at the full School assembly on Monday 04 February.A key dimension of the partnership between your family and our school is communication. Please do not hesitateto inform your daughter’s Head of Year of any issue that is relevant to her continued well-being.Year 10 – Mrs Lisa Bottomley lbottomley@somerville.qld.edu.auYear 11 – Mrs Sue McCracken smccracken@somerville.qld.edu.auYear 12 – Mrs Ann Olsen aolsen@somerville.qld.edu.auI look forward to working with you and your daughter throughout the year ahead.HEAD OF LANGUAGESMr C FornoWELCOME TO 2013!The Languages Department comprises four languages – Chinese, French, German, and Japanese. All membersof our Languages teaching team are committed to providing your daughters with an appropriately challenging, relevant, and interesting language-learning journey. Many innovative techniques are used to teach languages hereat Somerville House, incorporating music, the latest in technology, inter-active activities and much contact withauthentic materials from the country of the language studied. Focus on grammar is important to help our studentsto communicate. To begin the year, I would like to share some of my thoughts about language learning:- Every student can achieve progress in studying another language, given the right environment andappropriate learning strategies;- Nowadays, with young people having the choice of a multitude of pathways to their chosen careers postschool, knowledge and skills in another language can help them to achieve a career in just about any area(e.g., the Law, medicine, engineering, etc); and- Learning to communicate in another language is challenging, but the feeling of having made progress aftermuch trying is most satisfying; and- Learning a language can also give our students other ways of looking at the world, and the skills andknowledge to communicate with people from other cultural backgrounds.Parents should feel free to contact their daughter’s teacher at any stage of the year to discuss their daughter’sprogress.EXCHANGESPlease note that the due date for Exchange applications for 2013 to China, France, Germany, and Japan is10 February (addressed to Mr Forno please).CHINA TRIPI extend my sincere thanks to Mrs Rees and Mrs Curtis for accompanying twelve students to China. Thank you alsoto them for the following report:In December 2012, twelve students and two teachers spent more than twelve days enjoying the cold winter inChina.7

Upon arrival at Hangzhou Xuejun High School,we were warmly welcomed by school officials. After an exchange ofgifts between the two schools, students were picked up by each homestay family to start their Chinese homestayexperience.During the following week, Somerville House students spent time at the school with their Exchange partner toexperience the ‘Chinese way of learning and teaching’ as well as finding time to explore the local areas. Studentsvisited various tourist attractions and tried their bargaining skills when shopping. All participants enjoyed their homestay experience, the people they met, the food, the endless shoppingopportunities and the memories of China which they will cherish for years to come. The success of this trip has allowed us to build a strong link with our Exchange school, Hangzhou Xuejun HighSchool. We hope the first Chinese Exchange program will be finally established when the first group of Exchangestudents from Hangzhou arrives in 2013.DEAN OF STUDENTSI am seekingI am strivingI am in it with all my heart.(Vincent Van Gogh)Mrs K GrahamThere is no greater honour than to be appointed to a school of the calibre of Somerville House. The Dean ofStudents’ role is at the heart of student services: caring, nurturing, motivating and guiding our students from Prep toYear 12. Ensuring that the students’ behaviour is appropriate and intervening if necessary, to assist girls inmeeting the expectations of Somerville House, will be a priority too.Pastorally, the role covers the oversight of the Pastoral Care Program, liaising with teachers and Heads of Year.Parents’ first contact will be, in most instances, with the Tutor or Homeroom teacher or Head of Year, but there maybe occasions when the issue may be best discussed with the Dean of Students. Meeting with students, teachersand parents to ensure that our students’ needs are catered for with the best possible strategies and support is akey area of responsibility. The Dean of Students and the Student Counsellor/Careers, Ms Jan Cowen, are located in D Block StudentServices. In addition to the Student Counsellor/Careers, the School has appointed, Dr Filia Papadimitriou as theSchool’s Student Counsellor/Psychologist. All appointments can be made with Mrs Gillian Cunningham in theStudent Services Office. An exciting time ahead and a few challenges I’m sure but I can assure students and parents that I will be seeking, striving and in it with all of my heart.8

I welcome your enquiries and may be contacted on3248 9295 or by email: jcowen@somerville.qld.edu.au.In Queensland, the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) is the organising body that processesentrance into undergraduate university degrees and TAFE Diploma and Advanced Diplomas. While the majority ofschool students gain entrance via the OP system, there is an alternate pathway that allows school students to beOP-ineligible and gain a Selection Rank. This Rank allows students to apply for tertiary entry for Queenslandcourses. At Somerville House, these girls are doing the Somerlinks Program, run by Ms Jill Leahy. For 2012, a student completing a Certificate III while at school could expect to gain a Selection Rank of 68, which isroughly the equivalent of an OP 15 -16. A Certificate IV gave a Rank of 74, which was the equivalent of an OP 13.(These are subject to change.) A number of Queensland Universities offered courses where the OP cut-offs wereeasier than an OP16, including Australian Catholic University (ACU), Central Queensland University Brisbane(CQU), and Griffith University.A number of the 2012 Somerlinks girls applied through QTAC for tertiary entry this year into various TAFE andUniversity courses. It was very pleasing to see girls gaining direct University entry into a number of courses. Theseinclude the Bachelor of Education (Griffith University), Bachelor of Nursing (ACU), and the Bachelor of Media andCommunication (QUT). Other girls will undertake courses that have automatic entry to complete Diplomas inBusiness (SBIT) and Fashion (MSIT).For a number of students in Year 11 or 12, the Somerlinks Program may be a viable alternative. For moreinformation, please contact Ms Jill Leahy- email jleahy@somerville.qld.edu.au (phone 07 3248 9211) or me, MrsJan Cowen – email jcowen@somerville.qld.edu.au (phone 07 3248 9295).9

SAFETY TIP #1 – DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP ZONESDelay your pick-up time: A useful tip for parents to avoid the peak drop-off and pick-up zones is to delay yourafternoon pick-up by 5 to 10 minutes to allow time for your daughters to be ready for you at the gate and for thetraffic to ease. Teachers are on duty for Junior School students until 3.05 pm in the Loop and on Stephens Road, while Middle and Senior School teachers are on duty in Graham Street and on Stephens Road until 3.30 pm toensure students are safe. The problem in arriving early is that if your daughter is not ready to be collected you arecontributing to congestion in pick-up areas and stopping other parents from collecting their daughters. In particular, Middle and Senior School parents should only arrive to collect students after 3.10 pm,especially on Stephens Road. The limited designated area on Stephens Road is used for collection of studentsin Years 5 and 6 from 2.45 pm. Any Middle or Senior School parents arriving before 3.10 pm limits the opportunityfor parents to collect their younger daughters in this zone. The Seymour Library is open to Middle and SeniorSchool students until 4:30 pm for those students who wish to get a head start on homework, while providing amuch more relaxing pick-up for parents.P&F NEWSFROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE P&F, MRS WENDY COXOn behalf of the P&F I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who helped in the Uniform Shop overthese last two weeks of the school holidays - Lakna Alahakoon, Helen Barnard, Catherine Barnard, SarahBellchambers, Kanchana Bishop, Emily Cox, Sarah Cox, Rose Dunmill, Laura Healy, Jo Hulme, Lara Hulme, AydaInsel and Jennifer Williams.
