TEXANS OFFENSIVE OVERVIEWOFFENSIVE OVERVIEWRecord-setting performances in the run and pass gamehave the Texans’ offense ranked second in the NFL in totaloffense, averaging 415.5 yards per game. Houston leadsthe league with 172.0 rushing yards per game and ranksninth in passing with 243.5 yards per game.The Texans emphasized improvement in the run gamefollowing the 2009 season and have came through in 2010.Houston has rushed for more than 200 yars in a gametwice this season, something it had done only once inthe eight seasons prior. Against Indianapolis, rushing fora team record 257 yards behind RB Arian Foster’s teamrecord 231 yards on the ground.A week later, Houston showed that it hadn’t exactlyabandoned the passing game, setting a team record with468 net passing yards. QB Matt Schaub completed 38-of-52 passes for 497 yards, the 12th-highest total in NFL historyand three touchdowns in an overtime win at Washington.The Texans rolled up 526 yards of total offense in thegame, the second-most in team history and WRs AndreJohnson and Kevin Walter both had more than 10 for morethan 100 yards in the game, a first in team history.The offensive line showed it’s physicality in the openerto lead the ground charge. RT Eric Winston, who has anchoredthe offensive line with 58 consecutive starts, wasjoined by LT Duane Brown, free agent signe LG WadeSmith, C Chris Myers, the RG rotation of Antoine Caldwelland Mike Brisiel, and veteran FB Vonta Leach collectivelydominated the second half of the opener.Johnson leads the team with 255 yards receiving andwent over the 8,000-yard mark for his career and caughthis 600th career reception against Washington. He becamethe third-fastest player in NFL history to reach 600receptions, doing it in his 104th career game. Johnsonfinished the 2009 season with 101 catches for an NFLbest1,569 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns. Hebecame just the second receiver in NFL history to postback-to-back 1,500-yard seasons and was also the secondreceiver to lead the league in receiving yards in consecutiveseasons.Foster leads the NFL with 537 yards rushing and alsotops the league with 689 yards from scrimmage. Walterhas caught a touchdown pass in three of the team’s firstfour games.Pro Bowl TE Owen Daniels made a successful returnfrom the knee injury that sidelined him for half the 2009season, catching seven passes in four games.While Foster has seen a bulk of the carries in 2010, RBsSteve Slaton and Derrick Ward have both shown flashesof why each has a 1,000-yard rushing season under theirbelts. The Texans are one of eight NFL teams with a pair of1,000-yard backs on their roster.OFFENSE POSITION-BY-POSITIONQUARTERBACKSThe Texans offense lies in the capable hands of 2010 ProBowl MVP Matt Schaub once again this season. Schaubranks in the top five in the AFC in completions (86), completionpercentage (66.2), yards (1,037) and touchdowns(7). He has completed 86-of-130 passes for 1,037 yards,seven touchdowns and four interceptions for a 95.6 passerrating.In Week 2 at Washington, Schaub threw for a team record497 yards on 38-of-52 passing to help the Texans tothe team’s first overtime win. It was the 12th-highest passingtotal in NFL history.Schaub posted elite numbers in 2009, which markedhis first season starting all 16 games as a pro. He rankedamong the league’s top five passers in six categories andhis 4,770 passing yards not only led the league, but werealso the sixth-most in NFL history. Schaub also led theleague in attempts (583) and completions (396). His 67.9completion percentage was fourth in the league, and heranked fifth in yards per attempt (8.18) and passing touchdowns(29). His 98.6 passer rating ranked seventh.Schaub was the starting quarterback for the AFC in the2010 Pro Bowl and earned Most Valuable Player honorsafter setting the Pro Bowl record with a passer rating of151.3, throwing for 189 yards and two touchdowns.In three-plus seasons as the Texans starter, Schaubhas thrown for 11,091 yards with a team-record 60 touchdownsand 38 interceptions. Schaub has posted a quarterbackrating of 93.8 since joining the team, which is by farthe highest in franchise history among quarterbacks withat least 200 pass attempts.Dan Orlovsky won the backup job in the 2010 preseason.Orlovsky signed with the Texans during the opening weekendof free agency following the 2008 season. He startedseven games in 2008 for the Detroit Lions, completing 143-of-255 passes for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns andeight interceptions.Former Heisman Trophy winner and fifth-year veteranMatt Leinart was signed with the Texans following the2010 preseason. Leinart started 17 times and played in29 games in his four years in Arizona, throwing for 3,893yards and 14 touchdowns. He will compete for the backupspot as he acclimates to his new offense.RUNNING BACKSSecond-year RB Arian Foster, who came on strong latein 2009, burst onto the NFL rushing scened with the greatestrushing performance in Texans history in the seasonopener against the Colts. Foster set team records with 33carries for 231 yards and tied a team record with threerushing touchdowns.
