Attorneys learn from their mistakesand shortcomings. In this process, willpower serves as the driving force asopposed to raw talent or skill. Finally, Lincoln honestly faces the practicaldemands involved in moving beyond competence, the drudgery thatattention to detail sometimes requires. <strong>The</strong> advice itself is not particularlystriking, but therein lies its quality. Moving beyond competence does notrequire glamour or elegance, daring or esoteric knowledge—attributesoften associated with excellence. It requires a quiet, modest mastering ofthe basics.B. <strong>Model</strong> Rule 1.5—FeesThroughout the history of the legal profession there is probably nogreater source of consternation, skepticism, or fodder for pundits than theamount of fees that lawyers charge. 164 Thus, the Fees Rule governs asubject that elicits a visceral reaction from clients and lawyers alike; theFees Rule has been, and will continue to be, scrutinized and studied unlikemany others.
