Centre for African StudiesRoom 11.13ESS Building<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Leeds</strong>LS2 9JTYear 5 Africa Days – ModelThe delivery <strong>of</strong> the Year 5 Africa Days follows a Pre-View, New View and Re-View model.Pre-View – Activities for the teacher to use before the Africa Day to encourage pupils toexplore their perceptions <strong>of</strong> Africa and generate questions to ask the student prior to theAfrica Day.New-View – A day <strong>of</strong> activities about Africa delivered by the post-graduate students.Re-View – Activities for the teacher to use after the Africa Day to encourage pupils toexplore how their perceptions <strong>of</strong> Africa have changed and identify the knowledge andunderstanding they have gained as a result <strong>of</strong> the Africa Day.Pre-ViewLearning Objectives• To enable pupils to explore their views about Africa and the sources <strong>of</strong> such views.• To encourage pupils to think about the things they want to know about Africa.You will need:• Copies <strong>of</strong> an Africa map outline and ‘Things I want to know about Africa’ sheet.What to do:• Ask the pupils to find one or two partners to work with.• Ask each pair, or group <strong>of</strong> three, to write words / phrases or draw pictures on theoutline map about what they think Africa is like.• Ask the pupils to share their ideas with the whole class and to try and identify wheretheir ideas might have come from.• Now ask each pair, or group <strong>of</strong> three, pupils to think about the things they would liketo know about Africa. When they have agreed on three things they would like toknow ask them to write them down on the reverse <strong>of</strong> the outline map.• Keep the completed outline maps as a record <strong>of</strong> what the pupils thought aboutAfrica before the Africa Day.New –ViewThe new-view will comprise <strong>of</strong> the following:• Introductory activities – to enable the student to get to know about the pupils andthe pupils to get to now the student.


• Generic activities – to increase the pupils’ knowledge <strong>of</strong> the continent and tochallenge any stereotypes <strong>of</strong> misconceptions they may have about Africa.• Student activities – based on the student’s own knowledge, skills and abilities.Re-ViewLearning Objectives• To enable pupils to explore how their views about Africa have changed.• To provide pupils with an opportunity to identify what they have learnt about Africa.You will need:• The completed Africa map outlines and ‘Things I want to know about Africa’ sheetused in the pre-view activity.What to do:• Ask the pupils to get into the pairs or groups they worked in for the pre-view activity.• Give each pair, or group <strong>of</strong> three, their Africa map from the pre-view activity.• Ask each pair, or group <strong>of</strong> three, to look closely at the words / phrases or drawingson their outline map and to decide whether they want to change any <strong>of</strong> them.• Tell the pupils they can now include any new words / phrases or drawings to add towhat they originally thought about Africa.• Ask the pupils to share how their ideas about Africa have changed with the wholeclass.• Now ask each pair, or group <strong>of</strong> three, pupils to remind themselves <strong>of</strong> the things theywanted to know about Africa on the reverse <strong>of</strong> the outline map. If they have foundout the things they wanted to know ask they to write about their new knowledge inthe ‘Things I have found out about Africa’ section.• Explore the pupil’s knowledge and understanding by asking the class questionssuch as:o What was the most interesting thing they found out?o Did they find out anything which surprised them?o Was there anything that they didn’t understand?
