strengthen engagement with the Asia-Pacific region, inparticular with poor performing states.Australia will continue to support the Global EnvironmentFacility to address global environmental concerns, includingclimate change, biodiversity loss, degradation of internationalwaters, ozone depletion, and persistent organic pollutants. In<strong>2003</strong>-<strong>04</strong>, Australia will contribute to the Montreal ProtocolMultilateral Fund to assist with global efforts to repair theozone layer.UNITED NATIONS,COMMONWEALTH AND OTHERINTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONSEstimated total aid: $90.6 millionThe aid program will provide funding to a number of effectiveUnited Nations agencies engaged in poverty reduction andsustainable development. Australia will continue to buildstrategic partnerships with the UN to enhance aid outcomes inthe Asia-Pacific region.In <strong>2003</strong>-<strong>04</strong>, Australia will continue to support Commonwealthorganisations and programs to improve governance,development in small states, economic policy making andinstitution building.The aid program also provides support to address globalhealth concerns. Australia will assist effective internationalhealth organisations targeting maternal and child mortality,HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases in PNG, East Timor,Indonesia and the Mekong countries.NGO, VOLUNTEER ANDCOMMUNITY PROGRAMSNGO program estimated total aid: $26.4 millionVolunteer program estimated total aid: $21.6 millionNon Government Organisations (NGOs) play an importantcomplementary role in delivering a high quality aid program.The Australian aid program will work with NGOs on improvingprogram delivery, enhancing administration and accountabilityas well as supporting improvements in project design,management and evaluation.Australia will continue to foster community involvement in theaid program through support for volunteers. Funding for theAustralian Youth Ambassadors for Development program hasincreased in <strong>2003</strong>-<strong>04</strong> to $7 million.Community awareness of Australian development assistancewill be promoted by innovative outreach and educationactivities.
