Director's ForewordWhat a fabulous time at the Gallery this Winter / Springedition of Preview is covering!Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters, the launchexhibition of the exclusive three – year collaboration withThe Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York has opened.Jeff Wall Photographs, the first Australian survey of his work,is illuminating the upper level of the Gallery. And opening inOctober is Luminous World – an exciting display ofcontemporary art from the Wesfarmers Collection. It has been my absolute pleasure to witness theoverwhelmingly positive response to the launch of theMoMA Series and the Picasso to Warhol exhibition. It trulyis a superb presentation of some of the most significantworks from MoMA. And to borrow the words of Glenn D.Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art, it is anhonour to have their “A list works” on our walls.I was delighted that Glenn was able to travel to Perth forthe opening of Picasso to Warhol. It takes much trust tolend over 120 of your most treasured works to the otherside of the world. It was a pleasure to introduce Glenn toour wonderful State, and publicly acknowledge both histeam’s and my own team’s dedication and passion todelivering a world-class exhibition. It’s always refreshing to see works in a new context, andthe layout of the Picasso to Warhol exhibition does justthat. As you turn a corner, another work of art you mayhave only seen in an art book, reveals its whole self toyou and there’s a tantalising glimpse of others to come.I urge you, to take your time and fully appreciate thesemasterpieces in person. If you’re after a quieter time toexperience the works, my tip is to come on a Wednesdayevening when the rest of the Gallery is closed.I’m also delighted with the range of events and programsthat we have created to enhance your visit. The LiteraryLinks tour for Picasso to Warhol is a wonderful initiative byour Volunteer Guides. The CollaborART project has seenus forge lasting relationships with community arts partnersto present unique workshops for children and adults;deliver an inspiring Sunday Lecture Series and collaboratewith the AWESOME Arts Festival.

The purpose of the initiative is to survey andcelebrate contemporary art and cultural narratives fromIndigenous art-making communities across the Kimberleyregion of Western Australia. The initial phase of this project has been designed toinvestigate current activities within the visual arts in theregion and to establish a cultural network that will includeIndigenous art-making communities, regional, governmentand local organisations. The Gallery hopes that throughthis research we are able to stimulate interest andinvolvement from art-making communities in the project.A project of this scale requires effective, considered andculturally sensitive consultation in its initial phase. As suchthis phase of the project is committed to developingstrong, sustainable and mutually beneficial relationshipsbetween AGWA and Indigenous art-making communitiesacross the Kimberley.Chad Creighton, a Bardi and Nyull Nyull man from theKimberley who previously worked at AGWA as a curatorialintern and curator, has been employed as the Gallery’sCommunity Liaison and Project Officer and is based inBroome from where he has commenced research andconsultation relating to this exciting initiative.Chad Creighton overlooking Balgo Hills countryPhoto courtesy Russell Thomas

foundationAGWA Foundation FundsMajor PurchasesThe TomorrowFund is transforming the Gallery’s ability toadd major works to the Collection. It’s a special acquisitionfund initiated in 2008 and completed in June 2011. Theaims behind it were to bring Western Australian leaderstogether to create a special acquisition fund allowing theGallery to acquire the most important art of today for thepeople of tomorrow. The income generated from the TomorrowFund’s capital hasalready allowed the acquisition of 166 works of contemporaryart for your Collection. This includes 96 Western Australian,57 Australian and 13 international works.A group of four DVD works by the South African bornartist Candice Breitz is a major component of theinternational acquisitions. Titled Factum Trembley 2009,Factum McNamara 2009, Factum Bradley 2010 andFactum Hawke 2009, the works focus on pairs of identicaltwins. The couples deliver utterly compelling monologueswhich reveal the intensity of their relationships and, often, their very different perspectives on shared events. The works are the first of this major contemporary artistto enter the Collection. While the TomorrowFund provides the resources toincrease the contemporary holdings, a planned gift by thelate Sir Claude Hotchin is also making a significant impacton historical holdings. This gift has recently enabled theacquisition of the colour linocut, Swings 1932, by Australianprintmaker Ethel Spowers. This is the first work bySpowers to enter your Collection. Curator of HistoricalWorks on Paper, Lucy Harper, reports that “this workboosts the representation of modernist female artists, andin particular printmakers, in the Collection. More widely,it serves to illustrate important developments inprintmaking practice in this country.”As you can see, these funds, which are managed throughthe Art Gallery of Western Australia Foundation, areproviding an incredible platform for the Gallery to collectthe most inspiring and intriguing work of now and then.

We also develop our holdings through smaller donationsand more specifically focused funds such as the TomMalone Prize which develops the contemporary Australianglass collection and the Peter Fogarty Design Fund whichdevelops Australian design. Both of these are key, longstandingFoundation initiatives. If you would like to join us as we transform your State ArtCollection we invite you to become a part of the Foundation. For more information, please contact Development DirectorLyn-Marie Hegarty on 9492 6760 or Foundation ManagerTeresa Fantoni on 9492 6761.
