II.The CHRISTIAN’S Relationship To The LAW(vs. 19,20)19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of thesecommandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in thekingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shallbe called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds therighteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no meansenter the kingdom of heaven.1. Is the Old Testament Law still binding upon Christians?If so, to what extent? If not, then does this mean theOld Testament is meaningless to us?2. To answer those questions we need to look at verses 19,20in their proper context.Let’s look at some key words in verse 19.…..-First, Jesus says, “Whoever.” Whoever is a generalterm referring to all disciples of Jesus.-Secondly, I would draw your attention to those twowords, “these commands.” In the context of thispassage, Jesus is not referring to the Old Testament Lawthat He spoke of in vs.17,18, but rather He is referringto the LAWS OF THE KINGDOM.Beginning with verse 21 to the end of this chapter,Jesus gives six examples of how the “Law of theKingdom surpasses the Old Testament Law.”Jesus will preface those six examples with thesewords, “You have heard that it was said to thoseof old…….But I say……..”
3. Now you notice also in verse 19, that some will be called“least” and some will be called “great” in the kingdom.Jesus is talking about the eternal REWARDS of Hisfollowers. One day each and every Christian will standbefore the Judgment Seat of Christ. On that daywe will give an account of our lives. This is not todetermine whether or not we are saved. It is to determinethe greatness or the smallness of our eternal reward.And what Jesus is telling us in VERSE 19 is that ourresponse to THE LAW OF THE KINGDOM will determineour reward.*If we did not take God’s word seriously……ifwe didn’t faithfully obey God’s word and by ourwords and our example taught others to do thesame, Christ will call us “the least” in the Kingdom.*On the other hand if we took God’s word seriously,and faithfully obeyed it, and sought to live by it,and by our words and our example taught othersto do the same, Christ will call us “great” in theKingdom.4. So what does this tell us about our RELATIONSHIPTO THE LAW?It tells us we are no longer under the Old Law or theOld Covenant that God established with the Jewishpeople. We are no longer required to make animalsacrifices or to worship in a tabernacle or a temple.
