A Message from the PresidentIrene Geller enjoyed living at Las Ventanas, but something was missing. As Las Vegas’ only life care community, Las Ventanasoffered premium accommodations, amenities andactivities. But the seven-year-old community didn’tprovide a way for residents to help improve the livesof their current and future neighbors.Instead of complaining, Geller did something aboutit. She saw the possibilities a robust communityendowment could bring, so she helped establishthe Las Ventanas Foundation Committee.Geller’s desire to make life better for her neighborsis not unusual in our communities. Local foundationcommittees have been established becauseresidents and local leaders feel a passion for theirneighbors and for each other. They see the possibilitiesthat can spring from investing in theircommunities. Through fundraising efforts anddonations, local foundation committees are ableto respond to specific needs at their campuses.Because of this shared vision of improving the lives ofothers, the ABHOW Foundation was able to take manypositive steps in 2012 to enhance life in ABHOW’scontinuing care and affordable housing communities.Local foundation committees, for example, helpedraise funds for capital improvements. The Terracesof Phoenix’s 2nd annual Casino Night raised morethan $180,000 for community projects, including anexpanded resident activities center. At The Terracesof Los Gatos in Los Gatos, Calif., the GroundbreakingGala and Auction raised more than $32,000 towardthe construction of The Grove, a memory supportprogram, and The Lodge, an assisted living residence. In fact, during the 2012 fiscal year, local foundationcommittees added $886,878 in new contributionsfor special projects and donor-directed funds.Because of such generosity, the Foundation wasable to distribute $1 million in benevolent supportto the CCRCs.The Foundation also benefited affordable housingcommunities, providing $76,147 in grants to enhanceresident life. The annual ABHOW Foundation GolfClassic, the major fundraiser for the AffordableHousing Assistance Grant Fund, netted nearly$100,000. Such contributions enabled the Foundationto undertake a new initiative in 2012 — the Vial ofLife program, which provides seniors with a reliableway to keep critical health history easily accessibleto medical professionals in an emergency. The Foundation’s impact is due to residents andfriends who see the possibilities their generositycan yield. Their gifts are essential for advancingthe mission of ABHOW.– Joe Anderson, PresidentCover photo: Artist Kim Emerson, far left, joins ValleVerde residents Dorothy Burkhart and Helen Chuanin the Santa Barbara community’s new mosaicgarden, which was funded by resident contributions.2

A Message from the Chairman and CEOWhen Boy Scouts go camping, they followa simple yet essential rule: Leave thecampground better than you found it.The ABHOW Foundation and those who support itsubscribe to the same principle. We recognize andhonor the importance of leaving the environmentbetter than we found it as we strive to improve thelives of those within our communities. That belief has been a part of the Foundation sinceits beginning in 1968. And it is demonstrated everyday when donors provide funds that enhance thelives of our residents, team members and the citiesand towns we serve.Through the benevolent care program, for example, donations provide security to residents incontinuing care retirement communities whohave outlived their financial resources becauseof unexpected loss of income. Funds given to theFoundation assist these residents, ensuring thatthey can continue to live comfortably in the communitiesthey enjoy, without fear of moving. For many seniors, finding well-maintained homesthat are also affordable is nearly impossible.ABHOW addresses this demand with its affordablehousing communities, adding five new locationsthis year to bring the total number of communitiesto 31.Foundation Golf Classic raises money to benefitthese communities. This year’s tournament nettednearly $100,000 to provide services and amenitiesthat enhance resident life. The ABHOW Foundation convenes and supportsresidents, team members and friends who want tomake their ABHOW communities even better. Thisyear, local foundation committees at two Californiacommunities, The Terraces of Los Gatos and TheTerraces at Los Altos, created exciting fundraisersto support expansions that will increase services ontheir campuses. The desire to help others and the aspiration to leavethings better than they were found are embeddedin our ABHOW culture. The Foundation providesa means by which we can act on this passion toimprove the lives of our neighbors. By seeing thepossibilities on a local and organizational level, the Foundation helps ABHOW fulfill its mission“to enhance the independence, well-being andsecurity of older people.”– Frank Jennings, Chairman of the Board– David B. Ferguson, Chief Executive OfficerAlthough federal and state governments providesome funding for affordable housing, not allresidents’ needs are met. The annual ABHOW3

Seeing the PossibilitiesTurning possibilities into opportunities – that’s been the vision of the ABHOW Foundationsince its inception in 1968. From partnering with local congregations to address the need foraffordable housing to fundraising to create state-of-the-art memory support programs, the ABHOWFoundation sees beyond what may not exist to what can be.Seeing the possibilities does not mean ignoringdifficulties, such as an uncertain economy. Butknowing that opportunities do exist, and thatthey will yield even greater rewards, the ABHOWFoundation continues to work to benefit theABHOW communities.Donors are the heart of the Foundation. It isthrough their commitment and dedication on anindividual, local and organization-wide level thatthe Foundation is able to do its work. Many donorsare ABHOW residents themselves, so they knowthat their philanthropic support benefits their4

neighbors now, as well asothers who will join thecommunity in the future.Like the Foundation, thesedonors see the possibilities;they are willing to investfor the long term, realizingthat the ultimate benefitsare worth the wait.Consider the 20 donordirectedmemorial fundsthat are managed by theFoundation. While some, like the weekly scoop ofice cream, courtesy of theHenry’s Treat Fund, garneran immediate (and sweet)reward, others, such as theFoster Family EducationFund, may not show dividendsfor years. However, the Foster fund enablesteam members to acquirejob training, basic skillsor education leading to adegree in gerontology orrelated fields. The fund alsoprovides individuals withcareer advancement opportunitiesthat will ultimatelyhelp them make their ownmark in the senior livingprofession.Through donor contributions, the Foundationprovides significantbenevolent care for residentswho have suffered anunexpected financial loss. This security, while integral to the lives of residents,is also essential to the well-being and stability oftheir communities. In 2012 the Foundation provided$1 million in benevolent support to the continuingcare retirement communities. The annual ABHOW Foundation Golf Classic is amajor fundraising effort that benefits residents inthe affordable housing communities who live onlimited incomes. Proceeds from the golf tournamenthelp provide nutritious meals, transportation andother amenities to residents. The 2012 event nettednearly $100,000.When ABHOW soughtto meet the need forincreased memory support, donors in severalcommunities raised moneythrough vigorous fundraisingefforts. As a result, twocommunities broke groundin 2012 to augment theircampuses, expandingmemory care support, withone also increasing its residentialliving offerings.ABHOW has always been apioneer in the senior livingprofession. The developmentof continuing careretirement communitiesthat provide security andpeace of mind, the creationof affordable housingcommunities that enrichthe quality of life, andinnovations in memorysupport that celebrate theparticular journey of eachindividual – all of thesehappened because ABHOWsees the possibilities ofwhat vibrant senior livingcan really be.The Foundation shares thisvision. And by working withdonors throughout theorganization, the Foundationensures the vision willbecome reality.Donor-directed funds and special campaigns makegreat things possible at ABHOW, including, oppositepage, a musical program at The Grove at PiedmontGardens, where resident Floria Browning listens toRogelio Herrera play; a new memory supportprogram at The Terraces of Los Gatos, top photo, where resident and local foundation chairman JoeCusick and Executive Director Alex Candalla reviewplans; as well as the weekly scoop of ice creamenjoyed by residents such as Muriel Perkins andChuck Appel, above, at The Terraces at Los Altos.5

The Impact of the Foundation: CCRC EndowmentsFor many seniors, it is their biggest fear: running out of money and not being able to stay in theirhome. At ABHOW, residents in the continuing care retirement communities are promised thatif they fall short of funds through no fault of their own, they will never be asked to move. This promise is made possible through theFoundation’s benevolent care program, whichdistributed $1 million to the CCRCs in 2012.Benevolent care highlights a distinct hallmarkof the Foundation and its impact on the CCRCs:Resident generosity is the catalyst. Through localfoundation committees, residents act on theirdesire to help their neighbors by raising moneyfor special campus projects. Memorial funds, which are created by donors and managed by theFoundation, address a variety of issues, includingtraining for team members and additional careand services for those affected by memory loss.In 2012, for example, 15 team members wereable to heighten their skills using money from theFoster Family Education Fund. Residents benefitedfrom the Al Houk Fund, which helps those whohave limited finances participate in off-campusactivities. Local foundation committees raised$886,878 for special projects and donor-directedfunds – all to benefit their communities. The Terraces of Los Gatos Resident Foundationraised $333,463 toward The Grove, a new memorysupport program. The Terraces of PhoenixFoundation brought in $79,284 for the newResident Activities Building. The Las VentanasFoundation raised $44,167 for a new grand pianoand outdoor landscaping at the Las Vegas community. And in Santa Barbara, the Valle VerdeEndowment and Development Committee reached$36,572 for the community’s mosaic garden fund.CommunitySept. 30, 2011AdditionsDistributionsOther changesSept. 30, 2012Grand Lake GardensJudson ParkLas VentanasPlymouth VillageRosewoodThe Terraces at Los AltosThe Terraces at San Joaquin GardensThe Terraces of Los GatosThe Terraces of PhoenixValle VerdeTotal Endowment Funds $26,166,434$570,340 $525 $(22,602) $72,859 $621,1221,331,672 13,174 (49,632) 170,349 1,465,5622,868 350 - 384 3,601Piedmont Gardens 4,485,212 199,141 (175,392) 588,145 5,097,1073,926,260 32,565 (141,492) 503,314 4,320,6471,767,554 2,384 (60,120) 226,095 1,935,9131,461,357 54,306 (57,582) 188,889 1,646,9703,119,362 77,912 (116,208) 401,808 3,482,8731,256,407 37,230 (44,976) 160,969 1,409,630688,763 175 (25,740) (88,026) 751,2237,556,640 172,301 (287,280) 967,336 8,408,997$590,062$(981,024)$3,368,172Additions include new donations and assets transferred from matured trusts.Distributions are funds returned monthly to the community from the Foundation.Other changes include realized and unrealized investment income less Foundation expense.$29,143,6456

The Impact of the Foundation: Affordable HousingSenior living looks different in ABHOW affordable housing communities, thanks to theABHOW Foundation. With 31 locations in California and Washington,ABHOW communities offer a stylish, comfortableand affordable place to call home. But money canstill be tight for many adults age 62 and older whohave a limited income. Although the communitiesare subsidized by federal and state funding, not allresidents’ needs are met. That’s where the ABHOW Foundation comes in.Through generous donations from residents, friends and partners, the Foundation providesamenities that make retirement life on a limitedbudget a little easier. Each year, the Foundation hosts a golf tournamentto raise funds to provide additional services and8

amenities. The 2012 ABHOWFoundation Golf Classic nettednearly $100,000 throughtournament fees, sponsorshipsand auctions. Funds from thisevent, as well as from otherfundraising efforts, were putto work in a variety of waysin 2012.Lomita Manor, a public housingcommunity in Lomita, Calif.,is one of the newest additionsto the communities managedby ABHOW. Lomita Manorresidents needed computersto stay abreast of the news andto stay in touch with friendsand family. The Foundationprovided computers, as well asbrain fitness games, which helpstrengthen memory. At Tahoe Senior Plaza in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.,residents enjoy the walking paths that wind aroundthe community. When the weather turns cold, iceand snow can coat the paths. So that residents canremain active even during winter, the Foundationprovided the funds for a new treadmill.Community activities are important at Valley Vistain San Ramon, Calif. With a craft room, a library, computer lab and exercise room, Valley Vista naturallydraws residents together. A Foundation grantenabled the community to purchase a table tennistable so residents could engage in a little friendlycompetition, while exercising and socializing.“We are committed tocreating affordable communitiesthat are beautiful andimprove the quality of life ofour residents. Because of theABHOW Foundation’s support,we are able to honorthat commitment.”Ancel Romero,ABHOW Senior Vice Presidentfor Affordable HousingResidents at Pacific Meadowsin Carmel, Calif., requestedsomething unusual from theFoundation: a ballet barre.Several resident-run exerciseclasses incorporate Pilatesmoves to increase strengthand flexibility.
