Redshirt freshman PatMack will also provide depth on the offensiveline.“The first unit has experience as well asmembers of the second line,” Schurig said.“And overall we are stronger and will look tobe more physical up front and the line’s workin the off-season will lead us to that goal.”The DefenseThe defense allowed nearly 42 points per game inthe first seven outings of the season, but overthe last four, the Ichabods improved allowingonly 20, including the firstshutout in 36 games in a49-0 win over Missouri-Rolla.The Ichabods now have afull year under its belt with the 4-4 defensive alignment and with eightstarters returning and solid group of thosewho saw playing time last season, the defenseshould be improved. The Ichabods were 10th in scoring defense, pass defense, rush defense and total defense.“The returning players have valuable experiencethat will help us improve game by game thisseason,” Schurig said. “We have better athletes ondefense than we had last season, and we havemore depth to increase competition at all positions.”Defensive LineThe Ichabod defensive line has three offour starters returning with senior defensiveend Jacob Barth (left) and defensivetackle Eric Taylor. Taylor is moving fromdefensive end to the line’s interiorwhere he will join junior nose guardBryce Kelley. Also returning is sophomoredefensive end Terell Cobbwho started the final five gamesas a true freshman.New to the mix will beUniversity of Oklahoma transferBlake Nichols. Nichols redshirtedlast season for theSooners. Junior BoKobuszewski is movingfrom linebacker to defensive end and will provide extra depth on theline.“In this scheme, the front line is vital to the success of the rest of thedefense,” Schurig said. “They have to penetrate and control the line ofscrimmage.”LinebackersThe linebackers may be the most experiencedgroup of returnees for the defense with all fourstarters returning. At outside linebacker, sophomore Josh Looney and senior BrooksMyers (left) return. Myers finished fourthon the Ichabods with 88 tackles andLooney recorded 62.On the inside, senior Morgan Deweyand sophomore Grant Gould accountedfor 185 tackles last season with Gouldtallying 93 and Dewey 92.“In this defensive scheme, the linebackers shouldbe in a position to lead the team in tackles as theyare very run oriented,” Schurig said. The Ichabods have a pair of linebackers returningafter injuries in seniors Brian Peel and Jeff Wimpy. As ajunior at Washburn, Wimpy recorded 48 tackles.SecondaryThe Ichabods have two starters in the defensivebackfield returning in a pair of seniors -senior cornerback Darold Smith (right) andjunior free safety Joe Corcoran (left).Smith led the MIAA in passes defendedwith 16 including four interceptions, tying for the team lead with Corcoran.Corcoran led the MIAA intackles with 124, the thirdhighest single season totalin school history.Sophomore Mark Jackson, a redshirtfreshmen Tramaine Young and HenryTalley will all battle for the other startingcornerback position. Jackson played in 10games last season. Young is a transfer from Northeastern OklahomaA&M.“Our cornerbacks and safeties will continue to be active against therun, but they will need to improve their fundamentals in pass coverage,”Schurig said.Special TeamsThe Ichabods special teams will have the newest faces of any otherpart of the team this season as they are without a returning starter.First team All-MIAA and honorable mention All-America punter EricRoth spent his four years rewriting the Ichabods’ punting records, so thisseason, the punting and the placekicker positions are wide-open.Freshman Connor Sabel and Derek Banion will battle for placekickingduties and freshmen Ben Boswell, Joe Sample and Sabel along with redshirtfreshman Adam Azeltine will all compete for the punting duties.“We will be young with our kicking game,” Schurig said. “But we haveexcellent candidates and will have good competition for these duties.”Etc.The Ichabods have nearly 100 student athletes preparing for fallcamp, which is the most numbers in many years for the Washburn footballprogram. These numbers will add to team depth and add to thecompetition of playing time between each position. This season also marks the start of a new era with the opening ofYager Stadium at Moore Bowl. After a $4.25 million improvement andrenovation, the team, campus and community are excited to start the2003 season.“We are looking forward to not only playing in the new facility, butwe want to put a product on the field that will be worthy of our newstadium,” Schurig said.
