Introduction
The creation of the National Council of Geographical
Information in Algeria expresses a national political will to
give a new dynamics in the knowledge field and the
spreading of means of processing of the geographical
information.
The Council, created in 1996, is in charge to define and promote a
national policy of geographical information and to integrate it in the
overall step relating to the Information Society.

Composition of the Council
The National Council of Geographical Information is composed of a
chairman, a vice chairman, titular members and their substitutes
representing.
The ministers in charge of :
• The National Defense (Head of Geographical and Remote Sensing
Department of the National Popular Army) ;
• The Interior, Local Communities and Environment ;
• Finances ;
• The Energy and Mines ;
• The higher Education and Scientific Research ;
• The Agriculture and Fishing ;
• The Post and Telecommunications and Information Technologies ;
• The equipment and Country Planning ;
• Transports ;
• Planning.

Composition of the Council
The national institutions productive of basic geographical information :
• The National Institute of Cartography and Remote Sensing;
• The National Agency of Land Survey;
• The National Center of Space Techniques;
• The Research Center for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics;
• The National Order of Surveyors Land Experts.

Missions of the Council
In accordance with the relevant provisions of the presidential decree
96-405 issued on the 19 th of November 1996 related to the creation of
the National Council of Geographical Information, the missions of the
NCGI are as follows:
• To propose the national politics as regards geographical information and to followup
its implementation ;
• To assure the coordination of all the activities linked to the production of the
geographical information ;
• To propose any measure in order to promote the geographical information ;
• To follow-up and evaluate the evolutions of techniques and processes of production,
processing and preservation of the geographical information ;
• To ensure that the production of the geographical information and its media are
standardized in order to enable exchange of information between producers, users
or managers of the geographical information ;
• To give opinion on the representation of Algeria in the international bodies or at the
international conferences related to the geographical information and the remote
sensing ;

The organs of the NCGI are :
Organs of the Council
The Permanent Secretariat, the Technological Follow-up Unit and the specialized Permanent
Commissions.
The Permanent Secretariat
The Permanent Secretariat has the responsibility of :
• The management of the property holdings ;
• The follow-up of the program of activities ;
• The annual report ;
• External relations.
The Technological Follow-up Unit
• The technological Follow-up Unit enables the National Council of Geographical
Information to be informed of the state of art as regards the geographical information;

Six commissions have been created, they deal with :
• Cartography;
• Major Risks;
• Remote Sensing;
• Toponymy;
• Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Standardization;
