Two of the policies for review are highlighted below:Dogs and cats in pet shops - Revision of existing policy from 1999Pet shops play a role in companion animal supply and the provision of advice and ancillary pet careproducts and food. The operation of such facilities must be underpinned by state legislation andappropriate, community approved, control licensing and auditing arrangements.A mandated code of practice specifying the required standard of care, housing, husbandry, nutrition, health, hygiene, vaccinations desexing, microchipping, exercise and socialisation provisions, security, staffing levels and competence should be complied with. Pet shop owners and operators should onlysource animals from breeders registered with the local government authority or other registereddomestic animals business. These animals must be microchipped to ensure breeder and pet shoptraceability via a microchip database. The sale of pets should be complemented with appropriate petcare advice and guarantee provisions.

Veterinarians should be involved on an as needed basis for health and welfare issues, as well asadvisers on the overall management and care for animals.Animal shelters and municipal pounds - Revision of existing policy reviewed in 1999Animals kept in pounds and shelters should be housed under appropriate conditions that meet theanimals’ physiological, behavioural and social needs and ensure their health and welfare. Animals mustbe cared for humanely. Only animals with suitable health and behaviour should be rehomed. All animalsshould be scanned for a microchip immediately on entering the pound or shelter and checked against allrelevant microchip databases.
