The plan protects travellersagainst financial losses incurred from cancelled trips and offers personalaccident insurance.Speaking at the launch in Kuala Lumpur, <strong>Tourism</strong> Minister Datuk Seri AdnanTengku Mansor said with effect from July 1, it is mandatory for all licensedtravel and tour agents to issue travel insurance for local and overseas travel.<strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong> recently launched apromotional campaign based on theemotive and evergreen Rasa Sayang folksong in conjunction with <strong>Malaysia</strong>'s 50thyear of independence.The campaign calls upon all <strong>Malaysia</strong>ns,and all foreigners living in <strong>Malaysia</strong>(expatriates and foreign students) to act asambassadors for the nation and to invitetheir respective family, friends and businessassociates living abroad to come andcelebrate the nation's 50th year ofindependence together.This nationwide integrated campaign ispublicised through TV commercials, printnewspaper ads, radio, outdoor materials,and online media contests. The Rasa Sayangsong, sung in five different local languageswith lyrics that reflect <strong>Malaysia</strong>n mannerismsand speech, is an integral part of thecampaign.In addition, a specially dedicated website(www.rasasayang.com.my) with an onlinecontest is made available for <strong>Malaysia</strong>ns tosend personalised invitations to their foreignfriends to celebrate <strong>Malaysia</strong>'s goldenindependence. Its DiamondSuite has a dressing table, sofa set, TV withfull Astro channels, and Wifi service.The ward's international call centre canarrange medical referral, currencyexchange, return transfer from airport andhotel, visa extension, and other relatedassistance.Homestay in SarawakSarawak's newly-launched website directoryon homestay is set to draw more visitors.Special TV channels for tourismSpecial tourism radio and television channels will be introduced to promotelocal destinations and interesting events for the benefit of the public.This was announced by <strong>Tourism</strong> Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan TengkuMansor at a parliament sitting in July. He said discussions were under way withrelevant ministries to decide on the content to be offered by the channels.10.7 million tourist arrivalsin first half of 2007Tourist arrivals from January untilJune 2007 stand at 10,690,426, a24.8 per cent increase from last year'sfigure of 8,564,221 for the sameperiod.For the month of June 2007 alone,tourist arrivals to <strong>Malaysia</strong> numbered1,803,594, a 31.8 per cent increasecompared to last year's June figure of1,368,651. INDUSTRY NEWSCELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD 5Kuala Lumpur Convention CentreMATTA Fair 2007The Kuala LumpurConvention Centre (theCentre) recently became thefirst in <strong>Malaysia</strong> to obtain theHazard Analysis and CriticalControl Points (HACCP)certification.MATTA held its second MATTA Fair2007 from 7-9 September 2007 at thePutra World Trade Centre, KualaLumpur. It showcased a comprehensiverange of bargain travel and holidayproducts from all over the world.HACCP is used by the airlineand food and beverageindustry to identify potentialfood safety hazards alongthe food production chainknown as Critical ControlPoints (CCPs) to reduce oreliminate any risks.MATTA members urged to go onlineLocal travel agents are urged to start selling their holiday packages through the Internet.Speaking at the <strong>Malaysia</strong>n Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) annual general meeting on 30 June 2007, itspresident, Ngiam Foon, said while many people still preferred the personal service of travel agents, Internet bookings were a newtrend not to be ignored.Responding to complaints by travel agents that online ticket booking systems offered by airlines were affecting their businesses,Ngiam Foon assured that MATTA would come up with plans to help the industry cope with the change.RHB Travel InsurancepackageFifth <strong>Tourism</strong> Educators' Conferenceon <strong>Tourism</strong> and HospitalityRHB Insurance Bhd has unveiled itstravel insurance packages that focus onwider coverage and generous payouts.The Travel Protector and MATTA MediEvac insurance schemes offer amaximum coverage of RM300,000 formedical benefits, RM5 million foremergency medical transfers, RM50,000for funeral costs, RM5,000 for lostluggage, RM20,000 for tripcancellations and RM1 million ofpersonal liability coverage.This annual conference on tourism and hospitality was held at the UniversitiSains <strong>Malaysia</strong> from 3-4 August 2007.Jointly organised by the <strong>Tourism</strong> Educators' Association of <strong>Malaysia</strong> (TEAM) andthe School of Housing, Building & Planning, Universiti Sains <strong>Malaysia</strong>, it was aplatform for discussing and sharing information on contemporary issues andchallenges faced by the tourism industry in development and planning within theregion and globally.Stimulating inter-disciplinary discussions and networking, the conference providedfresh information to academicians, practitioners, and professionals about tourismdevelopment.


6 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD EVENTS<strong>Malaysia</strong> International Fireworks Competition<strong>Malaysia</strong> hosted the world's biggestInternational Musical FireworksCompetition (MIFC) from Aug 18 toSept 2.The competition was held at a lakesidein front of the Putrajaya InternationalConvention Centre (PICC). Apart from<strong>Malaysia</strong>, other competing countrieswere Italy, Japan, Canada andAustralia. They competed for theGolden Merdeka Trophy.The pyrotechnic artistry of thecompetition was different from anyother regular fireworks competition asMIFC participants had to meticulouslychoreograph their fireworks display tomusical rhythm.The <strong>Malaysia</strong>n team was the first topresent their spectacular musicalfireworks on Aug 18. The Australianand Italian fireworks team competed onAug 22 and 25 respectively while oneof the World Champions in MusicalFireworks technology, the team fromJapan presented their act on Aug 30.The highlights of the two-week eventwere a midnight countdown to usherthe 50th Merdeka Day on 31 August,and a 30-minute grand finale on Sept2.The finale showcased a mixedproduction of all the four competitors,each displaying five minutes of musicalfireworks extravaganza while the final10 minutes was a grand display by coproducersPyrofest, Canada and JoeGhazzal of Global 2000 Sdn Bhd.Complementing MIFC 2007, a familyfun park with amusement rides was setup at the lakeside and a themedrestaurant called "My Kampong" offered<strong>Malaysia</strong>n cuisines to visitors.The main organiser for the event wasGlobal 2000 and the Ministry of<strong>Tourism</strong> supported it. Among thesponsors were Maybankard, AmericanExpress, Perbadanan Putrajaya,Putrajaya International ConventionCentre and Cyberview Lodge Resort &Spa.Musical FireworksBy the 18th century, music wascommonly incorporated into fireworksdisplays. One famous performancetook place in London, England tocelebrate the signing of the peacetreaty ending the War of the AustrianSuccession. English composer GeorgeFriedrich Handel created a symphonyspecifically for this event called Musicfor the Royal Fireworks. In 1985,musical fireworks reappeared inspectacular style with the introductionof an international fireworkscompetition in Montreal, Quebec,Canada.Spectacular firework display


EVENTSCELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD 7Penang World Music Festival 2007The Penang World Music Festival organised by the Ministry of <strong>Tourism</strong> incooperation with the Penang <strong>Tourism</strong> Action Council and Sarawak <strong>Tourism</strong>Board enthralled and entertained thousands of fans.Held for three consecutive days from 20 to 22 July 2007, this inauguralevent is the first music festival in Peninsular <strong>Malaysia</strong> and took place heldat the Quarry Garden, near the famous Botanic Garden.The festival, which is one of Visit <strong>Malaysia</strong> Year main events, was arunaway success and left audience delighted and inspired by captivatingperformances from 18 bands who performed musical masterpieces fromcultural or community-inspired roots.The performers came from all corners of the globe, representing countriessuch as Solomon Islands, the USA, Afghanistan, Italy and South Africa.Jom Makan DurianTioman Mega Dive 2007Almost 30,000 durians were consumed by 10,000 visitors fromall over <strong>Malaysia</strong> at the Jom Makan Durian festival last July held atBukit Gantang in Perak.Guest of honour for the day was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk SeriNajib Tun Razak officiated the opening ceremony and announcedthat the festival would be held at a national level in 2008.This annual event also featured many varieties of durian-basedfood products such as durian flavoured dodol (a traditionalglutinous sweet), tempoyak (fermented durian paste), curries, andpastries.The Tioman Mega Dive, held from the 11 to 15 July2007, featured one of the biggest gatherings of scubadivers within the Asia Pacific region.Held in Tioman Island, this inaugural event offered diveenthusiasts the chance to participate in activities such asunderwater photography competition and treasure huntand conservation exercises. It has retained itspopularity in <strong>Malaysia</strong> till today due toflexibility in its design.Some of the finest batiks come fromKelantan in the peninsula's east coast.The art is said to have been firmlyrooted there for centuries and isprobably the reason for the pool ofexcellent designers who are among thebest in the country.Various design houses in Kelantan offerexclusive and fine batik cloth, most ofwhich are hand drawn. The beauty ofthe batik lies in its motif, which reflectsMalay influence.With the Islamisation of the region, thepatterns of <strong>Malaysia</strong>n batik has takenon more geometric and botanicaldesigns omitting depictions of humansand animals forbidden by the religion.One of the most popular selections ofbatik wear is the wrap-around sarongworn by most Malays and Indians athome. SHOPPINGCELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD 9Satok Sunday MarketThe colourful Sunday market at Kuching's JalanSatok offers household items, fresh farm produce,clothes, unique souvenirs, and exotic jungle products.Started in 1980 by the Kuching Municipal Council toallow unlicensed hawkers to sell consumer products,the market has become very popular over the years. Itis one of the highlights of a visit to Kuching.Although it's called a Sunday market, activities startfrom 2 pm on Saturday and end at noon on Sunday.The traders are mostly women from areas outsideKuching like Bau, Sematan, Lundu, Siburan, Asajayaand Padawan who bring in delicacies and unusualfruits not found elsewhere.For example, the mulong grub is collected from deadsago trunks. Edible wild herbs such as midin andpaku uban (jungle ferns) are sold along withbelimbing Sarawak and the dabai fruit.
