anywhere near as dramatic, or asdistracting, as the weight gain andnose-heaviness of the Glock 24. The35 has the oval cut in the top of theslide found on the Glock 24, but itdoesn't have the drastic weight reductioncuts found on the Glock 17Lor 34. Although longer than stock, the Glock 35 slide is just as beefy asthe stock slide, with the exception ofthat one oval cut in the top. Theends of the slide have been pinchedin as well making the gun easier toreholster and giving it a morestreamlined look. When equipped with any of arange of heavy magazine wells (SeattleSlug, JP, or Lightning Strike),the Glock 35 really comes into itsown. With a little extra weight in thegrip, the gun balances a lot like asingle-stack 1911, only it's lighterand sits lower in the hand. Unlikee third generation Glock 20s andGlock 35 will accept a batarketmagazine wellsd the magane,allowery17 frames require custom-cut accessoriesbecause of changes in the voidsize and repositioned lanyard loopholes.)So How Does It Shoot? My test gun showed all therough-and-tumble reliability thathas made the Glock popular in LimitedDivision, but I wanted to get anotherperson's opinion, preferablysomeone who wasn't shooting a"loaner" shipped to them directlyfrom Glock.I picked up the phone and calledLimited Grand Master Pat Kelley, ofSpokane, Wash. Kelley had recentlyswitched back to shooting Glocks aftera successful year of shooting thePara-Ordnance P-16. I knew he hadjust acquired an over-the-counterGlock 35, and I knew he would havebeen shooting it hard in preparationfor the Area 1 Championship."I just love it," he said. "I like theway it feels, and it shoots everythingyou give it. It's the 1911 of Clocks."Kelley explained that he keeps acoffee can next to his reloadingnch. Every round that comes outard or won't go into a Dilue goes into thecan for practice ammo (coffee canrounds often won't function in thePara's tight match chamber)."By the time I got my Glock 35, Ihad probably 250 rounds in that coffeecan. I had hollow points, roundnose, all kinds of junk," Kelley said."A couple of weeks ago, I took thecoffee can to the range. The Glockate every round, no problem."Kelley's 35 shoots noticeablyhigh at 25 yards, despite bottomingout the adjustable sights. My testgun was right on at its lowest setting.ChronographI took a Glock 22, 24, and the 35to the range for a session with thenew CED Millennium chronographand cycled a battery of IPSC-appropriateloads through all three.I timed 10 rounds each of Blazer,Federal, Remington, and Black Hills180-grain full metal jacket ammunition, plus 10 rounds of 180-grain cast3D and some of my own reloads. The Glock 35 added about 35 feetper second over the Glock 22 andlost about 30 feet per second to thelong-tubed Glock 24, easily makingEAR OLD TECHNOLOGY(=EL EXTRACTORSON EXTRACTOR made from supper alloyUSED AND PROMOTED BY THE 1997MI SUPER; .40 S&WACP -AVALIABLE LATE SUMMER 1998TORS:TERS INTLUM 4,STOM1 800-653-19111-610-433-9191s •506-C849ACTION SHOOTERS . major power with every round exceptthe cast lead 3D.Once I'd finished with thechronograph, I put up a clean targetand tried firing for accuracy from amakeshift rest. I was tired and a littlewobbly after shooting more than180 rounds, but I thought I could getsomething useful out of the attempt.Despite my fatigue, I was able tohold a four-inch 10-shot group at 25yards, complete with an obviousleft-to-right diagonal slash. Triggerjerk included, I was still shooting 70percent A's on a 25-yard upperpanel shot. Measured perpendicularto my embarrassing slash, the Glockwas holding its shots inside of twoinches.G35 Replaces The G24As predicted, Glock has stoppedmanufacturing the Glock 24 in favorof the 35. A few slide-and-barrel kitsare still available for the long gun,but in the future, the 34 /35 serieswill be the only competition kitsavailable. From what I can tell, however, shooters are coming out evenin the trade.Demand Supports PricesWhen you go looking for a Glock35, do some shopping. Although thesuggested retail price is $725, likemost guns, the suggested retail andthe actual retail price are quite different.Right now, dedicated Glockjockeys are snapping up Glock 35squickly, and that demand is helpingto support the price. However, ifyou hunt around, you should beable to find one for around $100over the stock model. In talking toJoe Troiani, media relations directorat Glock, I learned that the Glock 35carries a relatively minor price tagjump. When ordering from the factory, another $50 above the standardmodel buys the complete competitiongun."It's not like the Glock 24 whichcarried a premium," Troiani said."The difference at the distributorlevel is pretty small."Legal for Limited Division?Although the 35 is already appearingat matches across theUnited States, it still needs to waitout its year-long availability periodin order to be legal in USPSA's LimitedDivision. According to Troiani, the 34 and 35 first entered this countryjust before the 1998 SHOT Showin January and started shipping enmasse in late May. No matter whichdate you pick, the 35 won't be legaluntil sometime in the second quarterof 1999.Great Limited GunFor the shooter looking for acompetition Limited pistol, theGlock 35 has a lot of advantages notfound on the standard models. Thefinger grips molded onto the frontstrap will turn a few people away, but the longer slide, mag release, slide stop lever, and 3.5 pound connectormake the 35 almost raceready.Glock 22 owners can get many ofthe advantages of the 35 for less than$100 in parts, but owners of small.40 and the 9mm Glocks should lookhard at this gun. For any shooterlooking to buy a new Glock for LimitedDivision, the 35 is well worththe money.EGW The Innovative LeaderEtsw 11-7PHONE 215-348-9892 • FAX 215-348-10564050 B-8 SKYRON DRIVE • DOYLESTOWN PA 18901Available through Select DistributorsEGVV accepts VISA and MasterCardNovember/December 1998 • FRONT SIGHT 27
