<strong>Press</strong> <strong>Release</strong><strong>Tunisia</strong>-<strong>India</strong> <strong>cooperation</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>and</strong> Technology to benefit AfricaTwo important meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the area of science & technology wereheld <strong>in</strong> Tunis on 23 <strong>and</strong> 24 May between <strong>India</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tunisia</strong>. A workshop onbiotechnology <strong>and</strong> health sciences was held between Institut Pasteur,Tunis <strong>and</strong> the International Centre for Genetic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g & Biotechnology(ICGEB), New Delhi, <strong>in</strong> Tunis on 23 May, 2013. The two delegations wereheaded by Prof. Hechmi Louzir <strong>and</strong> Prof. V.S. Chauhan respectively <strong>and</strong>discussions centred on technology transfer to Institut Pasteur on combat<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>fectious diseases <strong>and</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g objectives of research <strong>and</strong> development<strong>in</strong> biotechnology for benefit<strong>in</strong>g countries of the African cont<strong>in</strong>ent.<strong>India</strong> is provid<strong>in</strong>g technical assistance for strengthen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong>Africa engaged <strong>in</strong> research <strong>and</strong> development <strong>in</strong> order to providewidespread benefit across countries of the African cont<strong>in</strong>ent, under the<strong>India</strong>-Africa <strong>Science</strong> & Technology Initiative announced by Prime M<strong>in</strong>isterof <strong>India</strong> Dr. Manmohan S<strong>in</strong>gh at the <strong>India</strong>-Africa Forum Summit held <strong>in</strong>New Delhi <strong>in</strong> 2008. The African Union Commission has selected theInstitut Pasteur <strong>in</strong> Tunis along with two other scientific research <strong>in</strong>stitutions<strong>in</strong> Ben<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> Gabon to work with the top <strong>India</strong>n scientific <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong>order to exchange technological know-how for capacity-build<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> hencethis meet<strong>in</strong>g. At this meet<strong>in</strong>g, it has been decided that Institut Pasteur willbe tw<strong>in</strong>ned with several lead<strong>in</strong>g laboratories of <strong>India</strong> towards capacitybuild<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>ation research <strong>and</strong> production.<strong>India</strong> is today one of the lead<strong>in</strong>g countries of the world <strong>in</strong> the sector ofbiotechnology; it is the only country with WHO-certified capability ofproduc<strong>in</strong>g live tissue cultures <strong>and</strong> materials for use <strong>in</strong>side the human body.The ICGEB is the premier biotech research centre of <strong>India</strong> <strong>in</strong> this sector<strong>and</strong> Prof. Chauhan is a renowned scientist who has made majorcontributions <strong>in</strong> the fields of malaria vacc<strong>in</strong>e, drug research <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> design<strong>and</strong> synthesis of peptides of biological importance, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>edesigns for HIV <strong>and</strong> novel antibiotics.The 3 rd session of the <strong>Tunisia</strong>-<strong>India</strong> Jo<strong>in</strong>t Work<strong>in</strong>g Group <strong>in</strong> <strong>Science</strong> &Technology was held on 24 May 2013 <strong>in</strong> Tunis after the Workshop. The<strong>Tunisia</strong>n delegation was headed by Prof. Slim Choura, DG of InternationalCooperation, M<strong>in</strong>istry of Higher Education <strong>and</strong> Scientific Research <strong>and</strong> the


<strong>India</strong>n delegation was headed by Dr. Arab<strong>in</strong>da Mitra. This meet<strong>in</strong>g washeld as part of the long-st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>cooperation</strong> between <strong>India</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tunisia</strong> <strong>in</strong>the field of <strong>Science</strong> & Technology - the Inter-Governmental Agreement <strong>in</strong><strong>Science</strong> & Technology was signed <strong>in</strong> 1995 <strong>and</strong> the current Programme ofCooperation, under which the two sides are meet<strong>in</strong>g, was signed <strong>in</strong>December 2011. The bilateral Programme of Cooperation has identifiedseveral areas for bilateral <strong>cooperation</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g biotechnology, materialsciences, Information <strong>Science</strong>, renewable energy <strong>and</strong> geospatial mapp<strong>in</strong>g.The Jo<strong>in</strong>t Work<strong>in</strong>g Group meet<strong>in</strong>g discussed <strong>and</strong> selected <strong>Tunisia</strong>n<strong>and</strong> <strong>India</strong>n researchers for avail<strong>in</strong>g of jo<strong>in</strong>t fund<strong>in</strong>g for jo<strong>in</strong>t researchproposals <strong>in</strong> diverse fields which will be carried out <strong>in</strong> the two countries.Both sides appreciated the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Tunisia</strong>n participation <strong>in</strong> theprestigious CV Raman Fellowship Programme of the Government of <strong>India</strong>launched <strong>in</strong> 2010 especially for African researchers to promote scientific<strong>cooperation</strong> between <strong>India</strong> <strong>and</strong> Africa; as also the <strong>cooperation</strong> betweenInstitut Pasteur of <strong>Tunisia</strong> <strong>and</strong> the ICGEB of <strong>India</strong> <strong>in</strong> the field of vacc<strong>in</strong>es<strong>and</strong> drug development. While launch<strong>in</strong>g the 3 rd edition of the Jo<strong>in</strong>t Call forresearch proposals, the two sides agreed that top priority would be given toprovide support to jo<strong>in</strong>t research <strong>in</strong> frontier areas between <strong>Tunisia</strong> <strong>and</strong><strong>India</strong> through mobility of researchers.Dr. Arab<strong>in</strong>da Mitra is a well-known geologist who has worked <strong>in</strong>Antarctica <strong>and</strong> has planned <strong>and</strong> launched several multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>aryexperiments there. He is currently Advisor <strong>and</strong> Head of InternationalBilateral Cooperation Division of the Department of <strong>Science</strong> & Technology,Government of <strong>India</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>in</strong>charge of <strong>India</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>ternational science,technology <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation engagements with 42 countries.The two teams called on HE Mr. Moncef ben Salem, M<strong>in</strong>ister forHigher Education <strong>and</strong> Scientific Research <strong>and</strong> on HE Mr. Abdelletif alMekki, M<strong>in</strong>ister for Health <strong>and</strong> briefed them on the progress made <strong>in</strong> thetwo meet<strong>in</strong>gs.****
