AllPresiderAllfor ever. In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrificefor the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted asyour children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you.On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat:this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gaveit to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood which is shed foryou and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do thisfor the remembrance of me.”In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident inhis sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.Christ has died,Christ is risen,Christ will come again.Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cupwe may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in ourwill to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, towhom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever.Amen.Lord’s PrayerPresiderAs our Saviour taught us, let us pray,All Our Father in heaven, Forgive us our sinshallowed be your name,as we forgive those who sin against us.your kingdom come,Save us from the time of trial, your will be done, and deliver us from evil.on earth as it is in heaven. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconciliationthat overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share ina prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.Prayer After CommunionPresiderAllSending Out of the DisciplesGod of hope,in this eucharist we have tasted the promiseof your heavenly banquetand the richness of eternal life.May we who bear witness to the death of your Son,also proclaim the glory of his resurrection, for he is Lord for ever and ever. Deacon’s NotesAPRIL 10, 2011This year we walk through Holy Week to the soundof women’s voices. The Women at the Cross series ofliturgies and meditations leading to MaundyThursday features Mary Magdalene, Julian ofNorwich and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The twoMarys’ voices speak to us through their stories inscripture, and in the case of Julian, through her writingsof her Revelations of Love. They are each presentat the cross in their own ways.In all four gospels it was women who witnessed the crucifixion.Though Luke includes women among Jesus’acquaintances, he is the only writer who doesn’t nameanyone.Matt. 27:55-56Many women were also there, looking on from a distance;they had followed Jesus from Galilee and had providedfor him. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and themother of the sons of Zebedee.Mark 15:40-41There were also women looking on from a distance;among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary themother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. These used to follow him and provided for him when hewas in Galilee; and there were many other women whohad come up with him to Jerusalem.Luke 23:49But all his acquaintances, including the women whohad followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.John 19:25... standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, andhis mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and MaryMagdalene.Julian of Norwich experienced the passion of Christthrough her visions as she gazed on the crucifix whileon her sickbed. “...and after this I looked with bodilyvision into the face of the crucifix which hungbefore me, in which I saw a part of Christ’s passion...”The week promises to be a rich experience as wedon’t often hear such a concentrated presence ofwomen in the liturgy of the passion. It may be interestingto notice how these feminine voices influenceour faith. The common theme these three particular voicesoffer is a theology of love. Mary Magdalene demonstratedloyalty, never leaving the cross during the crucifixion;bravery as she risked discovery while shesearched out the burial place, and love in herresponse to Jesus at the tomb. The Virgin Mary is awoman of Spirit, entrusting her life to the grace ofGod. Elizabeth Johnson, in her book Truly OurSister: A Theology of Mary in the Communion of Saintsstates “Classical theology characterizes the Spiritmost often as Love, a love that unites while preservingdifference. The presence of Spirit-Sophia bringsabout the fruits of love; blossoming life, engagementagainst suffering and evil, renewal when things getbroken and ruined, and energy for new beginnings.”(306)Perhaps Julian says it best in the final chapter in herShowings.“And from the time that [the vision] was shown, Idesired often to know what our Lord's meaning was.And fifteen years and more afterward I was answeredin my spiritual understanding, thus: 'Would youknow your Lord's meaning in this thing? Know itwell, love was his meaning. Who showed it to you?Love. What did he show you? Love. Why did heshow it? For love. Keep yourself therein and you shallknow and understand more in the same. But youshall never know nor understand any other thing, forever.'Thus I was taught that love was our Lord's meaning. And I saw quite clearly in this and in all, that beforeGod made us, he loved us, which love was neverslaked nor ever shall be. And in this love he has doneall his work, and in this love he has made all thingsprofitable to us. And in this love our life is everlasting. In our creation we had a beginning. But the lovewherein he made us was in him with no beginning. And all this shall be seen in God without end ...”(p.342)18 The Fifth Sunday in Lent | April 10, 2011
