C O N S T R U C T I O N100.05Civil engineeringFibertex Geotextiles

C O N S T RConstructing withFibertex GeotextilesFibertex offers a full range of nonwoven geotextilesdesigned for use in many different foundationstructures within civil engineering works. Themost common applications are:• Road works• Construction works• Ground systems• Drainage and filtration systems• Hydraulic works• Waste disposals (landfills)Fibertex technologyFibertex manufactures nonwoven geotextilesusing the drylaid needlepunch technology. Virginpolypropylene fibres are extruded, carded andfinally needlepunched. Furthermore, manyproduct types have thermal treatment added(e.g. IR bonding, hot air bonding or calendaring).Superior 3-dimensional geotextileFibertex Geotextiles are unique due to acombination of intensive needling and variousbonding processes. After being laid out horizontallythe intensive needling ensures that the fibres arefixed vertically. The result is a strong and flexible3-dimensional product which is advantageous inall parameters related to geotextiles.High performance FibertexGeotextilesThe drylaid needlepunch technology ensures highquality geotextiles with:• High strength and high elongation= high energy absoption• Excellent resistance to installation damage= high puncture resistance• Long-term wearing properties= more than 25 years of service life• Unique hydraulic properties= controlled high water flow• Excellent abrasion properties= no surface abrasion• High uniformity= ensured by production technique and qualitycontrol• No delamination= fibres interlocked in all 3 dimensionsAll Fibertex Geotextiles are UV-stabilised, resistantto acids and alkalis, and cannot be attacked byfungi or rot. No chemical binders are used inthe product or in the production process, andpolypropylene is a polymer material which turnsinto carbon dioxide and water vapour whenincinerated - both completely harmless substances.Advantages of using FibertexgeotextilesMore than 100 punches per cm 2Machine directionWhen using geotextiles between differentconstruction layers, mixing of the layers is avoided, resulting in an increase of bearing capacity andthereby also time and material savings. Highwater flow and good filter properties combinedwith the necessary mechanical properties of thegeotextile ensure that fine-grained particles areretained, while free movement of water is maintained.Consequently, stability is improved and life of theentire construction is prolonged.2

U C T I O NDesigning withFibertex GeotextilesSource: Palm Island, Dubai. Installation of Fibertex F-650M. The Fibertex Geotextile will be covered completely with gravel and sand. The importance of qualityFibertex’s quality management system is certifiedin accordance with the most comprehensivestandards set by the International Organisationfor Standardisation EN ISO 9001:2008. This meansthat the quality management system has beenimplemented and verified at all levels within theorganisation.Fibertex Geotextiles are CE marked under theEU Construction Products Directive. CE markingcertifies that Fibertex’s quality managementsystem (EN ISO 9001:2008) complies with the ENstandards (level 2+). Fibertex Geotextiles aresubmitted to production control and externaltesting by accredited test institutes in accordancewith the EN standards.Fibertex was among the first in the nonwovenindustry to obtain the ISO 14001 environmentalmanagement system certificate. Fibertex'senvironmental policy is to develop, produce andsupply environmentally responsible products. Toreduce consumption of energy and raw materialsand generation of waste are main focus areas.1071-CPD-1846Designing with Fibertex geotextilesFibertex offers design specifications according tofunction. The functions of geotextiles are dividedinto five categories: Separation, Filtration, Drainage,Protection and Reinforcement. Regardless oftype of construction, the geotextile performs atleast one of these functions. For detailed designspecifications, consult our Fibertex Design Guide. For design specifications for the function, Stressrelieving (Paving fabric), see ”Fibertex AM2 forStress relieving”. The design specifications andtechnical data are available on www.fibertex.comor by contacting your local Fibertex representative.3

C O N S T RFibertex GeotextilesFunctionsSeparationThe durability and mechanicalproperties of Fibertex Geotextilesmake them ideal for separatinglayers in construction works.A strong and flexible FibertexGeotextile is placed between the different layersin the construction preventing migration andmingling of materials, yet allowing free movementof water. This increases the bearing capacity andprovides long-term stability of the foundationlayers.FiltrationThe pore structure of FibertexGeotextiles is designed to retainparticles while allowing freemovement of water, making it possibleto separate two layers during intensehydraulic activity. Migration of layers, whichwould reduce the load-bearing capacity of thesystem, is thereby avoided and at the same timewater flow is maintained with minimum pressureloss.DrainageThe hydraulic properties of FibertexGeotextiles is designed to drainexcess water off the construction- not by passing through the fabric- but by flowing in the plane of thefabric away from the construction. The use of adrainage geotextile ensures an ongoing drainageof fluids with minimum pressure loss.4

U C T I O NProtectionThe excellent static punctureresistance of Fibertex Geotextilesmakes them ideal for protectingwaterproof membranes and othersealing materials from puncturewhen fill material and/or loads are applied. Whenplaced between sealing material and other layers, the geotextile withstands and distributes any localpressure from the layer above, ensuring that theprotected material is not stressed to failure.ReinforcementTogether with woven andgeogrid, the mechanical andhydraulic properties of FibertexGeotextiles make the product idealfor reinforcing slopes and otherearthworks. Reinforcement which incorporatesthe correct type of Fibertex Geotextile willprevent the collapse of vertical earthworks andsteep slopes.Stress relievingFibertex offers a flexible precompressednonwoven designed especiallyfor stress relieving. The stress relievingpaving fabric is ideal in both newroad constructions and in roadmaintenance, as it absorbs differential movementsin the road layers, preventing reflective cracking. The bitumen-saturated paving fabric also formsa waterproof interlayer, protecting the subsoilfrom water intrusion and thereby loss of bearingcapacity.5
