As a battle-tested knight with the experience ofmany a campaign, you thought that the landsaround Camelot had no more secrets in store, and that vanquishing the forces of Evil might becomemere child's play. You could not have been more wrong. Better put yoursword to the forge and sharpen your blade once again- for new threats are gathering in the mists of Avalon...Scouts are returning with stories of a coven of witcheswhose dark magic and nefarious schemes threaten thekingdom. Even the most well-traveled roads to Camelotno longer offer safe passage.Thankfully in these darkest of times, there are newknights still brave enough (or is it fool-hardy?) to jointhe Round Table, and Merlin himself has seen fit tobegin meddling in the kingdom's affairs...Are you a knight who will rest on your laurels, surrendering to the coming darkness, fading in theshadows that can only lead to treason and treachery?Or will you step forward, heart ready and sword atyour side, to pledge allegiance to the King and join uson this heroic journey?QHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHQWelcome to Merlin's Company, an expansion for theShadows over Camelot board game. To play, you musthave a copy of the original game.ComponentsThis expansion consists of:• A figure of Merlin - a new independentcharacter on the board, who may sweep inat times of dire need to aid your causeMerlin• 7 New Knights, represented by theirown unique Coat of Arms, eachmatching the color of one of theoriginal 7 knights of the original game(King Arthur excepted, of course, asthere can only be one true king!)• 63 New cards:- A new deck of Loyalty cards, including 1 additional Traitorcard- 16 New Travel cards, featuringevents that might occur as youtravel from Quest to Quest- 14 Black cards, including 7 new Special Black cards - allwitches allied to Morgan - to ensure a mix of new andold threats- 23 White cards, including 8 new Special White cards- much needed beneficial events to supplement those inyour original game- And a Summary card for Merlin• This expansion also includes a bonus figure ofSir Bedivere, a now hard to find promotionalfigure that was introduced at the originalgame's launch and, for the first time, a copyof his oft-requested official Coat of Arms andcolored die.9 Loyalty cards Loyal Traitor16 Red cards Travel14 Black cards 7 Standard 7 Special28 White cards 15 Standard 8 Special Blue card MerlinSir Bedivere1

2Modificationsto the original game set-upBefore beginning to set up your game using Merlin'sCompany:• Shuffle the 16 new Travel cards included in the expansionto form a Travel deck, and place it off the board, withineasy reach of the players.• Place the figure of Merlin next to the Travel deck.Merlin won't enter the board until the first Merlin Travelscard is drawn from the Travel deck sometime during thecourse of the game.• Add the 14 Black cards included in this expansion tothe Black cards of the original game• Add the 23 White cards included in this expansion tothe White cards of the original gameQccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccQSome of the new White and Black cards included in this expansionare identical to some of the cards that came with the original game, but it does not matter if differences in wear and tear between yourold deck and these new cards are visible or not. You will neverknow whether a new card is not just an old one with a fresherback. These apparent redundancies help preserve the balance ofeffects and proportions in the now larger White and Black decks. Each card in this expansion is also marked with an "M"to help you quickly sort cards out at the end of the game.QccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccQThen proceed with the game's normal set-up as described onpages 6 and 7 of the original Shadows over Camelot rulebook.Seven New KnightsIn Merlin's Company, due to his unique stature, King Arthuris always present. Assign his Coat of Arms at random to oneof the players before proceeding further. When the time comes to draw Knights (Step 5 of the originalgame set-up), you may now either:• Replace the entire set of Knight's Coat of Arms thatcame with the original game (including Sir Bedivere, but excluding King Arthur who is already assigned)with the 7 new Knights included in Merlin's Company:Sir Bors, Sir Caradoc, Sir Gaheris, Sir Gareth, SirGeraint, Sir Lamorak and Sir Owain, before drawingKnights at random from this new set of Coat of Arms;• Or select the Knight of your choice (old or new), providedthat no two Knights be of the same Coat ofArms' color (i.e. if a player selects Sir Gaheris and hisyellow Coat of Arms, then Sir Galahad cannot be inthe game). Use the Knight figure that matches the colorof your Coat of Arms to represent you on the board.MerlinThe wise old wizard is now a full-blown independentcharacter in the game, complete withhis own figure. Merlin starts the game off theboard; once certain events occur (see Travels &The Travel Deck), Merlin moves onto theboard and starts traveling from Quest to Quest, lending help to the Knights as follows:Merlin• Once during each player's turn, when his Knight ispresent on the same Quest as Merlin, the player maychoose to draw a White card from the draw pile. Thisdraw is a free Action and does not count toward theKnight's Heroic Action(s) for the turn.• In addition, whenever Merlin travels to a Quest that isno longer in play (Quests for Excalibur, the Holy Grail, and Lancelot & the Dragon), the drawing of a correspondingBlack card does not trigger the addition of aSiege Engine around Camelot; instead, the Black carddrawn is discarded, with no further effect.Travels &The Travel DeckThe roads around Camelot have become uncertain anddangerous. Unlike in the original game, moving fromQuest to Quest is no longer a sure thing for the Knights...Each time a Knight chooses to Move to a new Quest as aHeroic Action during his turn or through the use of hisSpecial Power (Sir Tristan), he must:• first declare where he wishes to move;• then draw a Travel card from the top of the Travel Deckand apply its effect before potentially completing hismove and reaching his intended destination. All other moves in the game, such as those triggered by thecompletion of a Quest, or those made out of turn, in reactionto the play of a Special White or Black card, do not triggerthe draw of a Travel card, and are still governed by thesame rules as in the original game. It is only those movesmade by the Knight as a Heroic Action during his turn orthrough the use of his Special Power that are modified.• If the Travel card drawn is a Nothing Happenscard, then... nothing extraordinary happens! The Knight completes his move andsuccessfully reaches the Quest of his choice.Gameplay resumes as normal.• If the Travel card drawn is a Merlin Travelscard, the Knight successfully reaches theQuest of his choice and Merlin's figure ismoved to his side on this new Quest. BecauseMerlin is not a Knight, he is allowed to travelto join a Knight on any Quest, including aSolo Quest (Black Knight, Lancelot).

• If the Travel card drawn is a Vision card, the Knight becomes so inspired by the visionof the Grail that he moves to that Quest, insteadof his intended destination. If the GrailQuest is no longer in play, the Vision has noeffect and the Knight may complete his moveas if he had drawn Nothing Happens.• If the Travel card drawn is aCharged!, Lost! or Ambushed!card, the Knight must successfullycomplete the challenge describedon that card or suffer theconsequences and immediatelyend his turn.• If the Travel card drawn is a Captured! card, the Knight is captured and held for ransom. He remains in place and can no longer play(place the Captured! card under the Knight'sfigure, to remember this) until one of hiscompanion Knights spends one of hisHeroic Actions to discard a Special White card and freeup the hapless Knight! Note that a Knight cannot freehimself, nor participate in any game action (card exchange,etc...) until freed by another participant. If anunmasked Traitor is still captured at game end, he cannotreveal himself, nor turn White swords into Blackones. So one must be careful not to unwittingly free upa Traitor, nor unwittingly keep a fellow Loyal Knightout of action!Once the effects of a Travel card have been completed, place it in a discard pile. In the unlikely event theTravel deck runs out, shuffle all the discardedTravel cards to form a new deck. Do NOT reshuffle the Traveldeck in any other instance, such as when instructed to reshufflethe Black and White draw and discard piles.Disposing of Black cardsfor Quests no longer in playWhen Black cards are drawn that relate to a Quest that isno longer in play (Quests for Excalibur, the Holy Grail, and Lancelot & the Dragon), they are now permanently removedfrom the game, rather than discarded. Thus theycannot appear in subsequent reshuffles of the decks duringthe game. Drawing such a card still leads to the addition ofa Siege Engine around Camelot, whenever applicable.7 and 8 player games:Two␣Traitors! With Merlin's Company, the game now accommodatesup to 8 players (7 Knights & King Arthur). This comes witha price though: in 7 and 8 player games, you will now addthe second Traitor card you received to the mix of Loyaltycards, at the start of the game. The two Traitors do not know who the other might be, oreven if another one is present in the group or not. At game'send, if there is one undiscovered Traitor, he will have to turnover 2 White Swords to the Black side. If there are twoundiscovered Traitors, they now turn over 3 WhiteSwords to the Black side! If they win, they revel togetherin their treachery...3CREDITSGame Design: Bruno Cathala & Serge LagetIllustrations: Julien DelvalSpecial thanks to all the valiant Knightswho have roamed both near and far in supportof this realm of Camelot, bringing manya new Squire into this adventure...Copyright© 2005-2008 Days of Wonder, Inc. 334 State Street, Suite 203 - Los Altos, CA 94022 - USADays of Wonder, Shadows over Camelot and Merlin's Company are trademarks of Days of Wonder, Inc. It is only the willing sacrifice of Life pointsthat is denied.3 rd WITCH (1 card)Adds a Pict and a Saxon figure to their respectiveWars, at once. This may cause one or bothWars to be lost. If need be, the consequencesof placing the Pict figure is resolved first, thenthe consequences of placing the Saxon.4 th WITCH (1 card)Each Knight immediately discards a Grail cardor loses a Life point. If you are on the Dragon'sQuest, you may choose to play 2Fight cards instead (though youcould still draw 3 White cards, if you preferred). You could thus play up to 3 Fight cards on theDragon's Quest during a single turn: 1 as yourHeroic action, and 2 more when playing theDragon Slayer after sacrificing a Life point.MERLIN TO THE RESCUE (1 card)Immediately move Merlin's figure tothe Quest of your choice. This doesnot need to be a Quest you are currentlyon.
