Teaching/ Learning Procedures:• Define and explain subtraction story and add it to the Math wall.• Review all vocabulary words.• Ask students to create a subtraction story with a partner using at least 2 wordsfrom the math wall.5-minute game:• Have students use counters to show subtraction sentences that describe a storygiven to them. For example, I have 6 flowers and 4 flowers die. Using thecounters show how many are left.• Explain the part-whole concept in subtraction stories by using connecting cubes.Have students follow along.• Have students practice on page 77 & 78 <strong>of</strong> Math in Focus book.• Practice problem will be done as a class.• Counters will be provided to assist students.• Observe the class work and help students that are struggling, if any.• Review and solve answers as a class.• Focus on the steps taken to get answer. Students will be asked to assist the teacherby stating the next step to solve the problem.• Ask students to write a subtraction story in their math journal using the picture onpage 81 as a reference.• Students will be asked to be creative and use the vocabulary words on the mathwall.• Students will be asked to share subtraction stories.<strong>Format</strong>ive Check (ongoing or specific):• Be sure students are using correct terminology when creating and writingsubtraction stories.• Check on students to use pictures when solving and writing addition stories andsentences.• Have students share with other students their stories and walk around to observegroup discussions.Reteach (alternative used as needed):• Create and read a subtraction story to the students. Using M&M’s students willdemonstrate the story that is being read. This will allow students to visuallyunderstand a subtraction story. Students will be allowed to snack on the M&M’sgiven for the activity.Closure:• Have a couple <strong>of</strong> students share their subtraction stories to the classroom.
