<strong>Houston</strong> <strong>Baptist</strong> <strong>University</strong>School of Education<strong>Lesson</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> Format_____________________________________________________________Subject: Math Grade Level: 1st Time Estimate: 15 minutesUnit: Addition and SubtractionTopic: My FamilyGoal(s): The learner will learn how their family compares to other student’s familiesbased on size and how to use addition and subtraction to solve problems.Objective(s): TLW model, describe, and illustrate the meanings of addition andsubtraction and use these operations to solve problems.TEKS: 1.3A, 1.3BMaterials/Resources/Technology needs:_______________________________________________________________________Instructional ProceduresFocusing Event: Ask students if they have small or large families.Teaching/ Learning Procedures:Show students an example of an addition word problem.Show students an example of a subtraction word problem.Students will draw pictures of their family on a piece of paper.The students will write how many are in their family.I will write number 1-10 on the board.Students will bring their family pictures to the board and place them under thenumber that they have in their familyThe students will compare how many people are in their family compared toother students in their class.The students will work together to figure out who has the most people in theirfamily and who has the least number of family members.The students will find a partner and create a number sentence to show howmany family members they would have if they combined families with theirpartner.The students will create a number sentence that shows the difference betweenthe number of family members they and their partner have.


Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Students will tell me if they have more orless family members than their partner. They will also tell me how many more orless family members they have than their partner.Reteach (alternative used as needed): I will only use a few students to put thenumber of family members that they have on the board so that it will not get tooconfusing for the students. This way the numbers will not get to large andcomplicated for the students.Closure: Students will draw a picture of their family combined with their partner’sfamily and write the number of family members they have together.Assessment/Summative Evaluation: Students will create word problems comparing thenumber of family members that they and their partner have.________________________________________________________________________Modifications/Notes:ELL- I will help these students by providing them with additional strategies to figure outthe answers to the questions.GT- These students will add all of the student’s family members together to find out howbig the family would be if we had one big family.
