understanding of the dangers of running away; dangerous situations that place <strong>girls</strong> at risk of abuse andexploitation; gender bias and the media; self-esteem building and personal safety rules. Fulton Countypublic schools currently participate in this program, and Atlanta public schools will begin in the fall.Angela’s HouseMost victims of CSE are held in the Metro Regional Youth Detention Center, which often proved to bean unsafe and unresponsive environment, or they were placed in youth facilities that were not preparedto deal with their special needs. In response to this void, the Atlanta Women’s Foundation created Angela’sHouse, a therapeutic refuge for <strong>girls</strong>. Angela’s House officially opened in 2001 under the direction ofDeborah Richardson, who developed the Juvenile Justice Fund as a vehicle to provide comprehensiveservices for the victims. Angela’s House is a six-bed facility that provides <strong>girls</strong> ages 13 through17 withprotection from predators, physical and psychological assessments, and a long-range plan of care andtreatment. Inner Harbour, a private not-for-profit psychiatric treatment facility in Georgia that specializesin programs for children and adolescents, provides the day-to-day operation and therapeutic treatmentfor <strong>girls</strong> at Angela’s House.Multisystematic Therapy (MST)MST is an intensive family-based program for the prevention of juvenile delinquency. Often when childrenare repeatedly seen in juvenile court, the root of the problem is at home with weak family infrastructureand poor parental supervision.In an effort to redirect a juvenile’s trajectory away from incarceration or removal from the home, judgescan mandate MST for the family. MST works to permanently change family dynamics through intensivein-home counseling; assisting parents in developing parenting skills and strategies to deal effectively withtheir children; and assisting children in learning to develop positive strategies to deal with problems athome and school without falling into antisocial or high-risk behavior. MST also integrates communitysupport systems, such as schools, churches, relatives and neighbors into the family’s support structure.Family support and stability are crucial factors in preventing at-risk <strong>girls</strong> from being sexually exploitedcommercially and ensuring that <strong>girls</strong> who have been victims recover.Standup for Kids, Atlanta ChapterStandup for Kids is a national organization whose mission is to help runaway and homeless children. Thismission is carried out by volunteers whose on-the-streets outreach efforts find, stabilize, and assist runawayand homeless children in their efforts to improve their lives. Standup for Kids also works to deter childrenfrom running away and offers resource programs in schools and via the Internet.Covenant HouseCovenant House provides services to youth, ages 16-21. Every night, the outreach van leaves Broad Streetseeking youth who are on the street from the hours of midnight to 8:00 A.M. to provide them with food anda referral to the community resource center for additional assistance. Covenant House provides basic services,such as food, clothing, and assistance in finding shelter. The program also offers case management, crisiscounseling and intervention, family reunification, GED and educational tutoring, vocational workshops,life-skills workshops, advocacy and community development, peer leadership groups, and health care assistance.Covenant House plans to open a homeless shelter for youth this fall.Project Safe Space – DeKalb CountyThe DeKalb County Taskforce for Runaway, Homeless and Sexually Exploited Youth was created to addressthe needs of these vulnerable children in DeKalb County. The taskforce is comprised of law enforcement,judicial, and social service agencies as well as community leaders. The taskforce has recently initiated ProjectSafe Place to assist children on the street and at risk of sexual exploitation by providing them with a “safeplace” and a chance to think through their problems with the support of caring adults.33
