Industryfunded Scholarships and Awards areavailable for the Bachelorn of Engineering(Materials Science and Engineering)degree and our combined degree.Strong industry partnerships inundergraduate programs underline thekeen demand for well-trained materialsscientists in the marketplace. Our industry sponsors include OneSteel,Weir Minerals, Cochlear, Hitachi ChemicalCompany, Gujarat Coal, CSIRO, ANSTO,BHP Billiton, Parex Davco, Sandvik Tech,Boral, Rio Tinto, Anglo Coal, BridgesBroking and Bureau Veritas. To view the current list of sponsors, pleasevisit our website. The School offers four types ofscholarships:Co-op Scholarships valued at $16500pa for up to 5 years (these are providedby industry sponsors and include atotal of 16 months industrial experienceduring the course).Industry Partnership Awards valuedat $3000 pa for up to 4 years (theseare provided by industry sponsors, andinclude the opportunity for professionalexperience).Privately endowed scholarshipsvalued at $2000 - $2500 pa for up to4 years.School Awards valued at $1500 - $2000pa for up to 4 years. For a full list of scholarships andapplication forms, visitwww.scholarships.unsw.edu.auCareers in MaterialsScienceOur internationally recogniseddegrees create local and internationalopportunities for graduates. Thebreadth and quality of skills developedby our students mean our graduatesare sought after by a wide rangeof employers in the scienceand engineering sectors, as well asbusiness and finance. The stronglinks between materials science andproducts in the marketplace meanthat more employment opportunitiesare to be found in this area than inother areas of science. Applicationsfor new materials and modificationsto existing materials will keepthe demand for trained materialsscientists growing. Materials scientistsand engineers work in areas ofresearch and development, qualitycontrol, technical support, processimprovement, technical sales andmarketing.Employers of our recent graduatesinclude OneSteel, BHP Billiton,Cochlear, Alcoa Alumnium, BlueScopeSteel, Weir Minerals, Sandvik, CSIRO,Bosch, Ove Arup, Shinagawa,ThalesAustralia, A.T.Kearney, Evans andPeck, Hyder Consulting, PeabodyEnergy and Brickworks.

A Student’s perspectiveSaul GriffithBE (Materials Science and Engineering)I always liked making things, from artto woodwork to strange toys, and I feltMaterials Science was a good place togo to learn about making stuff. I alsorealised that Science would provide methe opportunity to innovate. I was alsooffered a Co-op scholarship, and had theopportunity to study overseas for partof my degree. I felt the Materials Sciencedegree was an excellent choice …Materials Science gives you insight intothe problems in many areas ofEngineering and Science, from biologyto semiconductor physics. It is allabout structure and function and theirinter-relationship.$30,000 Lemelson-MITStudent Prize for Innovation and foundedLow Cost Eyeglasses. His inventionproduces prescription glasses within 10minutes.)David TrinhBE (Materials Science and Engineering)The structured way of problem solvingis, I would say, the aspect of the degreewhich has helped me the most in theyears since I left the School… highlightsof studying at the School must bethe camaraderie amongst the students, academics and research staff and thisis only possible through the small sizeof the school… my exchange placementin Sweden was also another highlight, which allowed me to explore theworld outside Australia and to observeengineering in other cultures.
