Clear vision and vital support
We are proud to share our 2010 Annual Report. In these still difficult
times, it is especially gratifying to say that 2010 was another good year
for Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly.
As we know you will appreciate, it’s no small accomplishment today
to report success. Non-profits are among the hardest hit in this weak
economy. Many organizations vital to the well-being of those in need are
facing severe cutbacks—or worse, closing their doors.
What sustains us and keeps us thriving?
PEoPLE LikE you. We are grateful for our volunteers, donors and
partners who are generous with their time, talents and financial support.
In turn, we pledge to be good stewards of our resources—and you’re
holding just one small example. Recently redesigned, Friendship is a
new and exciting way for us to communicate with you. Incorporating our
Annual Report in this Spring 2011 issue also helped us to reduce mailing
and printing costs for a separate publication.
We took many other important steps in 2010 to further our mission:
FoLLowing A cLEAR viSion: Guided by our strategic roadmap, Vision
2013, we made a bold move in an otherwise risk-adverse environment to
expand our services beyond Chicago. We’ve begun establishing a foothold
in Northwest Indiana, thanks also to generous Board members who
responded with substantial financial support.
StAying donoR-cEntRic: We recently restructured our development
department and welcomed new chief development officer Cecilia Straney,
who brings proven fundraising experience in the Chicago philanthropic
market. These efforts help us further support and sustain a diverse donor
base we can count on, year after year, and especially in tough times.
AttRActing dynAmic LEAdERS: A strong Board of Directors is vital to
our work. We’ve added new Board members who bring important skill
sets to guide this organization. To increase even broader involvement,
we also launched the Young Professionals Advisory Board, which is open
to civic-minded individuals, ages 24-40, who want to fundraise, and help
increase awareness and service for older adults.
Friendship is published quarterly by Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) Chicago Chapter.

Through 2011 and beyond, Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly looks
forward to continuing its mission through efforts to:
� Promote more opportunities for civic engagement for our elders who
are eager to give back to the community. Already, we’ve connected
some elders with the Esperanza School, which serves children and
adults with developmental disabilities, and with the Black Star Project,
a new intergenerational program with the Chicago Public Schools.
� Find new ways to better assess the impact of our programs and
services on our elders. Knowing more about our results will enable us
to better target our resources.
� Engage more people who want to share their skills and support our
mission by serving on our Board of Directors and participating in
committees.
� Expand on our person-centered approach. What sets us apart is
providing individual elders with the personal touch, from delivering
food bags to collecting Christmas gifts that each fulfill a special wish.
The next few pages provide more detail on what 1,572 volunteers
have done to reach out to 1,181 elders during more than 41,000 hours
of service in 2010. We’re well on our way to similar impressive numbers
for 2011.
With your support, we continue to fulfill our mission of relieving isolation
and loneliness, and carrying out our philosophy of flowers before bread.
You enable us to be there for our elders—to visit, to call, to celebrate and
to be, importantly, all the things that friends are for.

LittLE BRothERS – FRiEndS oF thE ELdERLy offers
each elder a lifetime commitment of companionship,
an increased support base and a network of friends.
In FY2010, Little Brothers provided unique programs
to 1,181 Chicago elders over the age of 70.
The help of 1,572 volunteers generated 41,461 hours
of service.
Last year, the average age for Little Brothers’ elders
was 83. More than three-fourths of elders served were
women. Our elders represent the ethnic diversity of
Chicago: African American (43%), Caucasian (36%),
Latino (19%), Asian (1%), and multiracial or other
race (1%). Many of our elders are physically unable to
leave their homes unassisted, many are low income
with limited means, and most cannot count on regular
contact with family or close friends.
giving We are a private non-profit and receive no funds
from the government, nor are we a United Way agency.
Our ability to forge lifelong connections with our old
friends comes from thousands of individuals and dozens
of corporations and foundations who express their
commitment to our mission through generous donations
each year. Little Brothers received $2,688,455 in
contributed support in FY2010.

experiences, we build a continuum of care, trust and
hope to provide elders with a community they can

viSiting Volunteers and staff improved the quality of
life for elders through regular visits, phone calls and
outings. Last year, Little Brothers completed 13,688
contacts with elders, including 9,861 in-person visits
and 3,827 phone contacts. These included 432 birthday
home visits to elders who could not attend our monthly
birthday parties. In addition, Little Brothers staff and
volunteers conducted 284 in-home celebrations—special
visits from volunteers to celebrate life.
cELEBRAtionS oF LiFE Our Holiday Celebrations
served more elders in FY2010 than the prior year,
with 2,063 meals provided for Thanksgiving, Christmas
and Easter holidays. Year-round, Celebrations of Life
activities at our Ashland facility and throughout the
city provided an additional 3,973 meals at 12 monthly
birthday parties, 14 celebration luncheons, movie club
and a monthly Creative Café. We also held 12 family
reunions for elders and organized additional group
outings such as trips to shop or go to lunch.
touching LivES One of our outreach efforts is to
meet continually with older adults and introduce them
to our programs. This year we met 649 new friends
through our Touching Lives events. Some of these
elders we met will join the Little Brothers family.
SummER vAcAtionS Little Brothers offered 289
interested elders a summer vacation experience. We
enabled 120 elders to take part in overnight vacations
outside the city at St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, IL,
or for a week at the historic lodge at Starved Rock State
Park in Illinois. An additional 64 elders, who could not
travel overnight, went on day trips in the city for such
activities as a luncheon boat tour on Lake Michigan.
An additional 105 homebound elders enjoyed in-home
vacation experiences, such as a Spa Day.
SPEciAL ASSiStAncE As many of our old friends faced
significant challenges, Little Brothers provided special
assistance to address unexpected needs and help the
elders maintain their independence. We saw a 17%
increase in requests last year (2,317 special requests)
for financial assistance, housekeeping help or other
support. A total of 1,110 food bags were delivered in
FY2010, with each providing a week of meals.
LLoyd wALding BRAin FitnESS cEntER In response
to research that indicates that mental exercise can
keep the mind sharp, Little Brothers launched the
Brain Fitness Center 18 months ago. The center features
computer terminals, Wii games, and other resources
to help elders learn new skills and play games. The
center was staffed with tutors, Monday, Wednesday
and Thursday, 10 am to 2 pm.

programs. To further support their
work, Little Brothers’ Volunteer
Advisory Committee continued to
meet regularly and recruit new
members, and also planned a
successful education seminar for
our volunteers.

its first Health Fair, and also

Sunshine Voices are elders who
volunteer to phone their peers for
periodic check-in. These peer-topeer
relationships offer a new way
to reinforce a sense of community
and friendship. In addition, our
Intergenerational Programs brought
together elders and young people
to share their experiences and
learn from one another.

Last summer, 289 elders participated in our
Summer Programs in Chicago and at destinations
beyond the city.
kick-off for hands-on help
LBFE has launched the Senior
Welfare Action Team (SWAT), which
connects qualified volunteers with
elders who need help with daily
chores and tasks around the house.
SWAT’s first volunteer Jesse Pena
recently assisted elder, Jean, by
assembling a bookcase for her
books and CDs. “Jean was very
happy because she needed to get
her things organized. This should
have taken just an hour, but I
stayed much longer. Jean makes
a great cup of coffee!” says Pena,
who’s been volunteering with
Little Brothers since 2001. “I’ve
always thought that a program like
SWAT would be a great service to
help elders. Being a tradesman,
I’m known to be handy. So SWAT
lets me fill a need—and be a
companion.”

LBFE gets Ready for Summer 2011
Taking time for fun and relaxation
is a treasured summer tradition for
Little Brothers’ elders, staff and
volunteers. From May 31 through
September 1, Little Brothers
will offer the following summer
activities for our elders:
� getaway vacations: 4-day/
3-night vacations to Illinois
Beach State Park or Starved Rock
Lodge. Located along the shores
of Lake Michigan, Illinois Beach
Resort offers beautiful views
and the chance to relax on the
beach. Elders will participate
in picnics and BBQs, and visit
downtown Zion for movies,
shopping and treats at Culver’s.

� LBFE receives a request from an
elder and confirms assignment
details.
� SWAT members are notified via
e-mail and asked to respond in
24 hours.
� Volunteers who respond are
e-mailed the final details and the
elder’s contact information.

nearby woods, plus enjoy boat
cruises, trolley tours and a Patsy
Cline tribute.
� A day Away: Elders who are less
mobile are invited to attend
a daylong outing with on-site
activities, plus breakfast, lunch
and snacks, hosted at LBFE’s
office at 355 N. Ashland.
Elders who are interested in
participating in summer activities
should contact their program
coordinator.
� After completing the task, the
volunteer sends a completion
form to LBFE.
Any LBFE volunteer is eligible
to be a SWAT participant, but
you must be able to receive
and respond to information via

Tribute gifts are a unique way
to honor and recognize special
friends and family. Your memorial
or tribute donation helps lonely
elders while celebrating a special
occasion such as a wedding,
anniversary, birthday or holiday, or
remembering the passing of a loved
one or friend.
When you choose to make a tribute
gift, Little Brothers will send a
personalized card to whomever you
designate as recipient. We do not
specify the amount of the donation
unless you request it, and you may
customize your message to the
recipient. You will receive a formal
acknowledgment and a receipt for
your donation.
Sherri Gorski, assistant director
of development, says that LBFE is
grateful to families that encourage
tribute gifts to LBFE to remember
their loved ones. “The Ryan
family recently lost their mother,

years. In lieu of flowers at her
memorial service, the family made
the decision to designate Little
Brothers – Friends of the Elderly
as the recipient of gifts made
in Nancy's memory. What a kind
gesture and a wonderful way to
recognize Nancy’s faithful support
of our unique programs. We have
received 26 gifts totaling $1,570.
The Ryan family and other tribute
gifts help to ensure that we are
there for our elders until the end of
their lives,” says Gorski.
Last year LBFE received 195
tribute gifts totaling $16,400.
This allowed us to host 960 elders
at our Wednesday luncheons,
featuring food, decorations,
flowers and entertainment.
