Starting with the <strong>Hebrew</strong>alphabet, we will eventually read from different passages of the Bible with the help of abiblical <strong>Hebrew</strong> lexicon.Course Requirements Class attendance and participationIt is mandatory for all students to attend classes, guest lectures, field trips, etc. Failure toattend classes will result in a student being denied the right to partake of the finalassignment and receive a final grade in a course. Students who have a justified reason tomiss class (illness, mourning, etc.) must communicate with their instructors and theDepartment of Summer Courses and Special Programs, and complete the material that theyhave missed. Students who have missed class due to illness must obtain a signed andstamped sick note from a treating physician and submit it to the Dept. of Summer Coursesand Special Programs immediately following their return to class. Failure to do so willresult in an unexcused absence. The Department reserves the right to refer the issue to anAcademic Committee. In some cases, the Academic Committee may decide, in light of therequirements of the course, that it is not possible to make up the missing course work.


Preparation of homework Final ExamAssessmentThe final grade of the course is given according to a final exam grade (80%) and a classgrade (20%). The class grade is given according to the attendance, participation andhomework preparation.Course Outline Week 1Alphabet and vowel signs; Shewa, dagesh and mappiq; nouns and adjectives; the definitearticle; nominal sentences; prepositions; the construct state; personal pronouns; pronominalsuffixes; demonstrative pronouns. Week 2Numerals; roots and patterns; verbal stems; tenses and moods; the strong verbs (Qal stemand derived stems). Week 3Object suffixes; weak verbs (initial aleph verbs, initial yod verbs, initial nun verbs, finalaleph verbs, final yod verbs, hollow verbs and geminate verbs).Weeks 4–5Reading and translating. Final Exam – Thursday July 25, <strong>2013</strong>; 9:00-11:00Course OutlineThe course does not follow a specific textbook. All students should bring to class a <strong>Hebrew</strong>Bible. It is strongly recommended that students be familiar with the <strong>Hebrew</strong> alphabet beforethe course begins.2
