Pitcairn Island: “Where Are We Going, Fletcher?”Abstract:From the Southern Pacific power struggle on the Bounty that producedone of the most famous of all mutinies, to the return of the primalHobbesian ‘war-of-all-against-all’ that founded the state of PitcairnIsland; and from the paternalism of John Adams and his bible as apuritanical mode of governance as a means of a return to Eden, to the trialof the Pitcairn men and the subsequent appeal for sovereignty, it seemsthat no generation since the HMAV Bounty mutiny has not beenfascinated with the politics of this tiny microstate. This thesis willinvestigate the dual function of Pitcairn as a functional microstate and asa fantasy space for the Western imagination and seek to determine whatthis subaltern island and the recent enforced import of Westerngovernmentality reflects back upon the global politics of the past decade.As a supplement to the thesis, a creative work based on the trial in theform of a learning play is a fictional re-telling of the events of the trial.2
