BRITISH MOTORSPORTMARSHALS’ CLUB SAFER MOTOR SPORTMARSHALS’ POSTTHE NEWSLETTER OF THE SOUTH EAST AND SOUTH WESTREGIONS OF THE BRITISH MOTORSPORT MARSHALS’ CLUBThe contents included in this publication do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the editor or the BMMC Ltd.www.marshals.co.ukMOTOR SPORTS ASSOCIATION RECOGNISED FOUNDED 1957January / February 2013Personal Accident andRepatriation InsuranceAs widely known by now, I am sure, wehad some problems with ourPersonal Accident insurance whenwe renewed in January 2012. The marketseemed to dry up on us and we were able toplace our insurance only after considerabledifficulty. Happily, it all ended better thanwhen we started, and from September 2012we are with new insurers who offer muchbetter cover.MSA EVENTS - BMMC PERSONALACCIDENT POLICYThis policy continues as a top-up policy formembers injured at events covered by anMSA Permit or Certificate of Exemption. Inthe past it has often paid out more quicklyand without the need to prove loss which issometimes part of any claim on the MSA PANewsletter informationThe deadline for the March /April newsletter is ThursdayMarch 21. If you have anystories you wish to see in thenewsletter, get in touch viapolicy – which, of course, offers much moregenerous benefits. It also covers participation in non-MSA approvedevents, both here and abroad and directtravel to and from the event.NON-MSA EVENTS – BMMC PERSONALACCIDENT POLICYWe have tried in the past, without success,to find a policy that gave members MSA typePersonal Accident cover at non MSA approvedevents. I am pleased to say we havenow secured such cover, for marshalling/officiatingat “approved” events. This is takento mean events at properly licensed circuitsor venues and operated by responsible organisations,i.e. no “cowboy” events. Coveris for both home and overseas events.Continued on page 11se.news@marshals.co.uk orsw.news@marshals.co.ukThanks.Inside this issueSouth East News p2-8 South West News p9-11 National News p12-16

South East NewsChairman’s thoughtsYou know how itis with motorsport magazinesduring the wintermonths when theyare committed to fillingcolumn inchesand yet they’ve nothingto comment uponother than tabloid-likegossip and speculationor “Reviews of the Year X”. I must admitthat none of it really compensates for theloss of track action.Being faced with fulfilling my obligation tocommit my “thoughts” to paper by mid-Januaryor face the wrath of our Marshals’ Posteditor, my thoughts returned to earlier in theyear when a BMMC(SE) member asked mea very valid question. He asked: “What do Iget out of BMMC membership?” It got methinking that beyond the usual “Insuranceand discounted overalls” answer, this was aquestion that need a much more persuasiveanswer. After all, this comes back to thecurrent key topic of how we motivate ourmembers to renew their subscriptions, yearin, year out. With this conundrum still very much inmind, back in November, at our last committeeMeeting of 2012, your committee spentsome time working through a situationalanalysis; more commonly referred to as aS.W.O.T. Analysis. For those of you familiarwith this kind of task, bear with me while Iexplain a little further. We undertook a simpleanalysis of the SE Committee’s Strengths,Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. I’llreturn to the S and the W in a moment. We took as read that the Opportunitiesincluded:1. NATIONAL & REGIONAL BUDGET2. NEW MARSHALS3. EXPERIENCED MEMBERS4. MARSHALS’ POST5. EXPERIENCED COMMITTEE6. SOCIAL EVENTS (what, where?....Ihear you ask)And that there was only a single realthreat: THE POSSIBILITY OF MARSHALSFAILING TO RENEW THEIR BMMCSUBSCRIPTIONS.In groups of three to four committeemembers, we spent the best part of twohours identifying a number of strengths andweaknesses that either we felt currently existwithin the performance of your committee or,more intuitively, that might be viewed by SEmembership as existing in your committee. As this exercise is not yet complete, please bear with me if I spare you the details, save to say that the following broadPRIORITIES illustrate what we are going towork on prior to, as well as at, our Januarycommittee Meeting:Establishing clear goals (for 2013).Improving communications with members.Improving committee work structure (so weare better equipped to implement theabove). Improving member retention (as aconsequence of the three tasks above).Of course you will be reading this early inFebruary, by when SE committee will havecompleted its analysis, but what then?By the time the next issue of Marshals’Post is published (April 6, if you want toknow), the motor racing season will havealready swung into action, and it will be toolate to inform you of the actions we will taketo implement our four PRIORITIES. I’mpretty sure that one key step that will betaken is to make much more use of themarshals’ website, www.marshals.co.uk andit is there that BMMC(SE)’s 2013PRIORITIES will appear in full detail. (Forthose without access to a computer, you willhave to wait a little longer until you receiveyour hard copy of the March-April Marshals’Post). So there we have it! For 2013, a02 / se.news@marshals.co.uk

Wetend to take a passive role in ASEMC, asour main purpose is motorsport race marshalling, whereas the other clubs have amore local organising and social side. Anumber of the clubs do arrange motorsportsevents, including rallies, trials anddriving tests, all of which require some formof marshalling. So if you wish to trysomething other than race marshalling, youcan contact the organising club and offeryour help, I am sure they will welcome thehelp. Some of our members also marshal atmotorcycle meetings so I shall also includedetails of these, although BSB and MotoGPevents are covered by Racespeed, who Ibelieve have fairly strict requirements andwill only use their own members. As well as Brands Hatch, Lydden Hill andSnetterton, I shall also include Thruxton,Goodwood and Silverstone which are all onthe edge of the SE catchment area. There are several ways in which you canvolunteer for an event:nDirectly through the organising clubnUsing the volunteering form onJulian's site - www.marshals.org.uknUsing the volunteering form on theBMMC website. Each method has its pros as well as itscons:nOrganising clubs will only show theirown events, therefore multi submissionswill be required if you wish to marshal fordifferent clubs. Many of the clubs will haveavailability forms on their website, whilstothers will require hard copy.nJulian Floyd's marshals.org.uk websitehas an events list for the whole country indate order, volunteering is done by club/region but they do not (at present) haveforms for BARC.nBMMC have forms for circuits in theindividual regions, so if you wish to volunteerfor a meeting at Donington, for example, you will have to go to the Midlands’region page, and although all events in theregion are shown in a single list, once receivedby the competitions secretary, theystill have to be split up for submission to theindividual clubs before forwarding, addinganother link to the chain.se.news@marshals.co.uk / 05

National NewsCLAIMSClaims should be made promptly to theNational Treasurer at NatTreasurer@marshals.co.uk in the first instance; copies toNatSecretary@marshals.co.uk andBMMCChair@marshals.co.uk to make sureno claims are missed through absence ormissed e-mails. Please include anyofficial/medical reports from the venue wherethe incident happened, plus any subsequentreports from claimant’s own medicalattendant.AGE LIMITSThere is no upper age limit, so older memberswho still marshal/officiate can rest easy. There is no lower age limit, but TTD (temporarytotal disablement) in respect of thosenot in regular employment is limited to whilstthey are in the care of a hospital. This wouldapply regardless of age.The Sum Insured for Accidental Death islimited (by UK law) to £7,500 for minors(under 16). Obviously this would not affectthe MSA events but may be a considerationfor the Non-MSA events with a higher SumInsured.FUTURE THOUGHTSNow we have such valuable cover at nonMSA events it becomes questionablewhether we continue with our existing top-uppolicy for MSA-approved events, where MSAbenefits apply. That is to say, should we relysolely upon MSA cover for their events andour own policy providing matching benefits atnon-MSA-approved events? We are hesitantto change just yet.As previously stated, higher benefitpolicies require sterner tests of loss and thesettlement process is often longer. Also withhigher benefit policies, any claim can causesteep rises in premium – which is where Icame in as Treasurer, when there was asubstantial claim on a relatively low premiumpolicy, leading to the club’s inability to meetthe new premium. Hence the reliance thereafteron the existing policy, where therelationship between premium and benefitsis more reasonable.Clearly, something for Council to consideras time goes on and we see how we get onwith the new insurance.REPATRIATION INSURANCEAnother valuable new benefit, this timerequiring a modest premium from memberswho travel abroad to marshal. Many standardholiday policies may not cover repatriation inthe case of someone injured as the result ofa motorsport incident. Cover is for up to£50,000 any one person who needsrepatriation following injury while officiatingabroad. Industry tables show the most expensivemedical recovery is around £35,000,from the West Coast of the USA.REGISTRATIONTo register for repatriation, the cost is £10per marshal, for the period covered by ourinsurance – 14th September 2012 until13th September 2013 and on for futureyears. Try to give as much notice as possiblebefore a planned trip. The process is cheque for £10 to ClubBookkeeper, note to NatTreasurer@marshals.co.uk, with copies toNatBookkeeper@marshals.co.uk andNatSecretary@marshals.co.uk. However, when it comes toMarshals’ Club newsletters, the cost of providinghard copy newsletters is becomingdisproportionately costly.Newsletter printing and postage used tobe our biggest single expense; it is no longerthe largest but still substantial and there arefurther savings to be made if more peoplewould take newsletters in e-mail form.Newsletters are now sent out as links, sothat you can see them anytime and do notneed to clutter your own computer with largenewsletter files. With postage rates set at 60p first classand 50p second class, this adds even moreemphasis to my previous note about the useof e-mail wherever possible. At these rates, the cost of a printed newsletter, plus envelope, plus stamp will pretty well use up thebalance left in each subscription once wehave accounted for Personal Accident andPersonal Liability insurance cover for all ourmembers and other necessary admin costs.Could those of you who still want toreceive newsletters in the printed form, please examine again the possibility of takingnewsletters via email. If you would like to receive your newslettervia e-mail, send your details to eitherse.news@marshals.co.ukorsw.news@marshals.co.ukMany thanks,George CopelandNational TreasurerNatTreasurer@marshals.co.ukwww.marshals.co.uk / 15
