As the Ministry for the Environments TLI system relies on water quality data it is notappropriate for Northland lakes. In our small shallow lakes, nutrients are rapidlyexchanged between weed, water, algae and sediment. All of these parts of thesystem must therefore be monitored if we are to fully understand the extent ofnutrient pollution.9.3 The State of the Lakes of Northland9.3.1 Dune LakesNorthland has a large number of small shallow lakes. Most of these have beenformed between stabilised sand dunes along the West Coast. The dune lakes aregrouped on the Aupouri, Karikari and Pouto Peninsulas. They vary in size, with themajority being between 5 and 35 hectares in area and generally less than 15 metresdeep. Lake Taharoa of the Kai Iwi Group is one of the largest and deepest dunelakes in the country, covering an area of 237 hectares and being up to 37 metresdeep.Maps 15 and 16 show the location of lakes on the Aupouri, Karikari and PoutoPeninsulas.Typical Northland dune lakeKai Iwi LakesHistorical studies have shown that these lakes have exceptionally high water qualitycharacteristics (Northland Regional Council, 1991). Bathing water quality surveysconducted during 2000-01 confirmed the high water quality of Lake Taharoa inrelation to bathing water quality standards. In addition, historical studies have shown that:• The waters were very clear and not polluted with organic material. Phytoplanktonlevels were low with no obvious signs of eutrophication.153Northland Regional Council State of the Environment Report 2002
