Should westay or shouldwe go?Location, location, location.UC Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr puts thecase for the <strong>University</strong> remaining in Ilam.More than 60 years ago a decision wasmade to relocate the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> from its town site to a new siteat Ilam. That decision was taken for anumber <strong>of</strong> reasons, not least <strong>of</strong> which wasthe fact the <strong>University</strong> had outgrown itsland and buildings, and post-warprojections <strong>of</strong> growth and prosperityforecast not only increasing demand but anincreasing willingness and ability to pay forhigher education. It took more than 20years to complete the relocation, which wasfully implemented over 35 years ago. Todaythe 87ha <strong>University</strong> campus services morethan 20,000 staff and students. Seventytwoper cent <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s studentslive within 2.5km <strong>of</strong> the campus. Eightthousand rooms are clustered in 240separate structural spaces with adepreciated book value <strong>of</strong> more than $525million and a replacement cost in thebillions <strong>of</strong> dollars.14
