<strong>BCA</strong> ACADEMYExecutive Education4OverviewEstablished in 1992 as the first MSc programme in <strong>Facility</strong><strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> <strong>Management</strong> in Engl<strong>and</strong>, this programmepresents a unique opportunity to experience a researchledlearning approach <strong>and</strong> share learning between peersin London <strong>and</strong> Singapore, a unified programme taughtconcurrently to both London <strong>and</strong> Singapore cohorts.The UCL lecturers conduct face-to-face teaching, smallgroup discussions <strong>and</strong> practical site visits to leadingfacilities in Singapore, while supporting distance-learningwith video conferencing at <strong>BCA</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>and</strong> providingaudio <strong>and</strong> visual recordings <strong>and</strong> other learning materialsonline. This approach is designed to empower studentswith a flexible yet integrated learning experience to honetheir interests <strong>and</strong> extend their capabilities in facilitymanagement.The programme covers the provision <strong>and</strong> managementof facilities <strong>and</strong> services to support high performingorganisations. 5 UCL MSc in <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> <strong>Management</strong>AIMSThe MSc in <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> <strong>Management</strong> addressesconcerns in the use <strong>and</strong> performance of buildings <strong>and</strong>support services over time. Its core focus is the effectiveplanning, design, management, maintenance <strong>and</strong> adaptationof building stock, to function appropriately <strong>and</strong> efficiently tomeet specified needs.The primary aim of the programme is for students to achievean integrated underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the basic knowledge <strong>and</strong>operational skills required for the good management ofbuildings, their environments, facilities <strong>and</strong> support services.StructureThe programme will be taught part-time over two years. Theprogramme content consists of eight taught modules (120credits), <strong>and</strong> an extended piece of original research resultingin a written research report of 10,000 words (60 credits). Social Dimensions of Sustainability (Year 1)This module explores how architectural <strong>and</strong> engineeringdecisions can deliver a more sustainable built form.It aims to enhance the underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the complexrelationships between built environment, individuals,communities <strong>and</strong> society.2. Efficient Building Services Systems (Year 1)The module deals with energy & carbon emissionimplications of the selection, operation <strong>and</strong> control ofheating & cooling systems in buildings.3. Sustainable <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>Management</strong> Operations(Year 1)The module equips <strong>Facility</strong> Managers with the knowledge<strong>and</strong> skills to identify <strong>and</strong> implement sustainableimprovement measures <strong>and</strong> technology in existingbuildings.DissertationMSc Research Report (60 credits)Students are required to submit a 10,000 word report ona subject agreed with the Programme Director. The topictypically is selected from live problems that need to beaddressed by the company sponsoring the student. Bothstudent <strong>and</strong> company should benefit from the investigation<strong>and</strong> its conclusions.


<strong>BCA</strong> ACADEMYExecutive Education8DeliveryThe programme will be delivered through blended learning,a combination of face-to-face <strong>and</strong> distance-learningmodes. Five modules will be taught in four-day block,face-to-face sessions at the <strong>BCA</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> by UCL staff.Typical timing will be all day Wednesday through Friday<strong>and</strong> a half-day on Saturday. Three modules will be taughtpredominantly through distance-learning delivery, withstudents meeting every two weeks in the early evening,at the <strong>BCA</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.Face-to-face teaching options will include:• seminal lectures• small group discussions• workshops with h<strong>and</strong>s-on exercises• practical site visits to leading facilities in Singapore• networking lunchDistance-learning options will include:• live video-link sessions with the London cohort;• interactive sessions including live quizzes;• individual tutorials delivered online via email <strong>and</strong> Skype(telephone <strong>and</strong> videophone);• shared discussion/chat site for all students in London <strong>and</strong>Singapore;• FMExchange sessions (optional) to be recorded in LondonProvisional dates for 2011/2012:Induction: 20 Sep 2011Core module 1: Block taught, 21 Sep – 24 Sep 2011Optional module: Early evening sessions, fortnightly, 5 Oct – 14 Dec 2011Optional module: Block taught, 9 Nov – 12 Nov 2011Core module 2: Block taught, 4 Jan – 7 Jan 2012Core module 3: Early evening sessions, fortnightly, 11 Jan – 21 Mar 2012Exams: May 2012Dates for the following year will follow a similar pattern. 9 UCL MSc in <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> <strong>Management</strong>EntryRequirementsThe normal academic qualifications for entry are a secondclassBachelor’s degree of a UK university or an internationalqualification of an equivalent st<strong>and</strong>ard.A second acceptable qualification is membership in a UKprofessional institution. A third acceptable qualification is adegree of lower than second class honours st<strong>and</strong>ard withsome knowledge, demonstrable competence, <strong>and</strong> a skill setrelated to facility management practice.Applicants without a first degree or full professionalmembership, who have substantial work experience infacility management, may be admitted after passing a specialqualifying examination.As the programme is designed to enhance the knowledgebase of practitioners in facility management, it is necessaryfor c<strong>and</strong>idates to have some knowledge, demonstrablecompetence, <strong>and</strong> a skill set related to facility managementpractice, in addition to the above requirements.The University’s minimum English language requirementsmust be met. Evidence may be requested if needed.Applicants who, within three years prior to starting theProgramme, have undertaken a course which was taught inEnglish at a tertiary institution extending over twelve months(one calendar year) are deemed to have met this requirement.FeesThe programme fee for the two year programme isSGD $32,500 (before GST) before subsidy. The programmefee may be paid in 4 instalments. In addition, a one-timenon-refundable application fee of SGD 50 (before GST) willhave to be paid at the point of application.Subsidy70% scholarship subsidy* on course fee (excluding GST) forlimited seats is available. This scholarship subsidy is offered bythe Skills Training for Excellence Programme (STEP), under itsBuilt <strong>Environment</strong> (Sustainability) – STEP Scholarships, whichis jointly funded by STEP <strong>and</strong> <strong>BCA</strong>. *Terms <strong>and</strong> Conditions apply.


<strong>BCA</strong> ACADEMYExecutive Education10AwardParticipants who satisfy the assessing requirements of therespective modules <strong>and</strong> their dissertations will be awardedthe degree of Master of Science in <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong>al<strong>Management</strong>. Such award, including the transcripts, will bethe same as those conferred for studies on campus at UCL.A Postgraduate Diploma will be awarded to students whosuccessfully pass only the taught modules. A PostgraduateCertificate will be awarded to students who successfully passhalf the taught modules.AccreditationThe London programme is approved by the RoyalInstitution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Followingsuccessful re-accreditation of the programme in 2010with the British Institute of Facilities <strong>Management</strong> (BIFM),graduates of the programme with suitable facilitiesmanagement experience will be eligible to apply forthe new Certified grade of membership (CBIFM). Theprogramme is also affiliated with the Chartered Instituteof Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). Application isalso being made for International <strong>Facility</strong> <strong>Management</strong>Association (IFMA), accreditation.ApplicationsIn order to accommodate the collaborative requirements of<strong>BCA</strong> <strong>and</strong> UCL, applications will first be sent to <strong>BCA</strong>, thenforwarded to UCL for selection.
