Both isl<strong>and</strong>s were encountered byChristopher Columbus on his third voyage in 1498. <strong>Tobago</strong> changedh<strong>and</strong>s between the British, French, Dutch <strong>and</strong> Courl<strong>and</strong>ers buteventually ended up in British h<strong>and</strong>s. <strong>Trinidad</strong> remained a Spanishcolony until 1797 but it was largely settled by the French.
